TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

1. It is extremely important to make a backup copy of your original image file. Accidents happen all the time. Should you make a mistake and save it the image may be lost forever.
2. Do any "Cropping" or trimming of waste before you work on the other attributes of an image. It can have a major affect on how the image looks. An entire section has been devoted to "Crop". See it for more details.
3. Image file formats such as BMP, TIF, JPG or GIF can easily be changed from one to another by loading the file into IrfanView. Save it back to your disk using the correct format filename extension. The software will translate it for you.

Example: Your image is a BMP format. The file name is Mont 5.bmp. Load it into IrfanView, go to the upper left corner of the screen and click on "File", then "Save As" and the window comes up.

Click on the window "Save as type", run down the list and select the format you want. Click on it. Make sure it appears in the "Save as type" window and then click on "Save".

4. Some pictures appear very dark, faces can't be seen, in general they need to be lightened. As the first step in lightening an image use "Gamma correction". Gamma has to do with the mid-range brightness. "Brightness" and "Contrast" are more for high-lights. A dark picture can be lightened using Gamma and then some adjustment to the contrast and brightness may give more definition and cause the picture to appear sharper. Make gradual moves. These functions can be found in IrfanView by loading the image, "Image" at the top, coming down the drop down menu to "Enhance colors".
5. Some images just plain have too much color in them. They appear red, yellow or green. Attempts to adjust color can be very frustrating. Try reducing the Red, Green and Blue equally at the same time. Use small steps.  These functions can be found in IrfanView by loading the image, "Image" at the top, coming down the drop down menu to "Enhance colors".
6. If you prefer not to print out the tutorial, but still want it readily available to read as you work you can have both running at the same time. Bring up your internet browser, log on to the message board and click on "Image Help". Now start up IView or log onto the message board again by bringing up your browser a second time and logging on. At the bottom of your screen you will see icons for both programs or browsers that are running. You can use these independently to move around the tutorial and the message board or IView. To change from one to the other click on the icon at the bottom of the screen. If you do not like to keep clicking from one to the other, you can jump back and forth by holding the "Alt" key down and hitting the "Tab" key.
