I'm looking to get a new reel for my 9.5' surf rod.I know I could spend alot of money and insure i'll get a decent reel but what do my fellow brotheren have and recomend?I'm looking for something that will cast well even with 50lb line strung on it.The reel I have now if I put anything but spiderwire on it,I can't cast over 35yrds out.I don't know much about reels, most of my buddies just fish with what came on the pole from the store,or a zebco 33. Could someone give me a crash course on reels?

Like anything else you get what you pay for Fishinfool.

With that said what I've been using on my 10 ft Surf Spinning outfits is the Eagle Claw "Beast" SB-90. I have two of them and have worked them hard for almost two years. I use 50# Spiderwire "Stealth" and am satisfied with this low end reel. I've seen them at some tackel stores and the Catfish Connection has them for about $27. The Spiderwire "Stealth" is a little thicker than the regular Spider but is easier on the casting finger and less likeley to cut you.

thanks baitkiller,I was considering the beast. It seems like what I'm looking for.I've been using original spiderwire, and have heard good things about stealth. However it sounds like power pro is used by alot of the BOC.I've never had a problem with the 50lb spiderwire, but if their is something better out there I'd like to use it.

I dont know much about the best spinning reels, but you cant go wrong with Abu or Penn in baitcasters. Tica for me! After you figure out what you want, I would recomend Ebay. I got my new Tica reel for less then half of store retail price and I have seen other excelent reels go pretty cheap. Both Stealth and Powerpro are excelent lines!

I've been using the stealth and really like it,just put 65lb power pro on one of my reals and I'm going to try it out.I like baitcasters, but I've always been more comfortable with spinning reels just the feel of them, guess it's just what I'm used to.
