Hello, I also faced the same problem when fishing below dams. It took about 4 or 5 trips and a wad of cash before I finally come up with a pretty good trick for keeping "some" of my tackle. What I do is spool up with a heavy lb. test line such as 20# test line. Attach a large swivel at the end of the 20# main line. Attach whatever size snelled hook your using to the large swivel. Next, using a small lb. test line such as 4# lb test, cut about a 4 to 5 ft section of that line. Now, tie on one end of the line to a very small and inexpensive swivel. Tie the other end to a 1-2 oz sinker. I use bank sinkers. Now attach the small swivel to the larger swivel. So, you will have your hook with bait, and about 4-5 ft. below your hook will be your weight. The idea here is to get hung up, that is with the 4lb. test and weight. You want the weight to hang up on the rocks leaving your bait about 4-5ft up in the current and out of the rocks. With the strong currents generated below the dam, when a fish strikes it will instantly snap that 4lb. test and usually set the hook for you leaving you free to reel in your 20lb. main line, hook, and hopefully a monster fish. I usually put my wife to work before each trip, tying up these break away lines as I call them before hand. This saves alot of time and each time you catch a fish, all you have to do is grab another 4ft section of line and weight, snap swivel to swivel and your ready to go. Try wrapping the line around and around the bank sinker till' you get to the swivel, then tape it for easy storage. Good luck and let me know how that works for you. |
