Wow its getting really rediculus I can't believe I have not caught one yet, ive tried chicken livers, store bought chicken blod doughballs, night crawlers, cut shad from the store, I have tried fishing in calm parts of the river, in the rapids, right before the rapids, right after the rapids, ive tried fishing the bottom with just sinkers, ive tried fishing with a bobber, ive tried log jams spill ways, I think im not sure about how long I let my line set before I reel in, ive tried letting it sit for 5 mins and casting out every 5 mins in same spot, ive tried casting fairly quickly I just dont know, any tips on bait, and how long to let the line sit in the water? also ive tried in ponds, lakes and mostly the Great Miami River which is a 5 min walk from my house.

I'd let it sit a lot longer than 5 minutes.

If your in a good spot it may take an hour for a good cat to smell your bait and cruise up to it.

Put it out there, set it up with a rod holder, and sit down and R E L A X!!

If you can have 2 lines out I'd put cut bait on one, and Crawlers on the other. You'll probably see more action on the nightcrawlers, but the cut bait will get you bigger fish.

Patience is the key. Especially in full daylight, they tend to not move fast unless you happen to drop the bait right in front of their nose. Put your lines out into what looks like a good hole and don't touch them for an hour unless you get a bite. And don't be too quick to jerk that hook either. Wait till the rod starts bending, or you see the line starting to move off.

Fresh cut shad will work wonders. And what Bill said patience is a big key in catfishing. And usually once you find where they are you'll keep catching them there until they move along..which current would effect that.

Look at the water, learn to "read" it.

More fish tend to hold in deeper, slower water.

Watch for places where the current going downstream makes a back eddy.

For a simple example.

---->
---->
---->
---->
/\<-

The 2 /\'s are a riprap pile or obstruction. It forces the current around it, and on the back side if you look closely, the water may actually be going upstream. If you watch the bits and pieces of stuff on the surface it will go around in a circle, like a tub drain.

Also look for places where there is a "line" of small eddys or whirlpools. Many can teach you more than I can. But learning to read the river is a part of it. Patience is another.

Definitely let it sit longer than 5 minutes. I'll sometimes sit for 30min to an hour before a bite. Patience. I definitely think you'll see an increase in your catch if you're not always casting. Let them come to you! ;)

fish the outter bend of the river, fish the eddy's as posted above, look for swirling holes, under cut banks, brush piles, points, and flats. Fresh bait is the best, whether it be shad, perch, or crawfish. Patience, i fish a hole for thirty to forty minutes, if no strikes, i move on.

you could also use a slip floater to find holes as long as the current is not to nasty. i have been fishing alot of log jams along the bank with floaters and chicken livers and do ok most of the time. if you tight linning i would say get a comfy chair and a good buddy to swap stories with and just fish.
