I mostly fish the rockriver here in northern Il. A medium size river. I have a st.croix catfish pole in med.with an abu. garcia 6500 c3 on it and love it. But i may want to pursue bigger catfish is a med. good enough for bigger flatheads or should I go to a med/heavy.(the med/heavy rods at gander mt. seem so big)just dont want overkill any opinions? Was thinking of a ugly stik tiger or tiger lite in med/heavy or a quantum big cat pole. |

chris- i think a medium action rod will do fine in most situations. however, if you plan to fish areas with heavy current and snags, you may want to step up to a medium/heavy or heavy action set-up. good luck! |

And i think you should ask your self before you fish "am I doing this for sport or food?" If sport go with a med-light rod with a small spining reel this is like cathing Marlin. For food go with a unlimited shark rod with a 180# line and a cable winch for a reel. My opinion is lighter you go the more fun it is. I fish this way and do lose alot but when i tell people and show a photo of a 30# fish landed on 6# test you get way more !!WOWS!! And you feel better about your self. |
