Well personally I've never been a big fan of liver. Most any rough fish, scaled, cut into chunks, thrown on a hook will make good bait. Some like Shad, Goldeye are very very good. I've also had pretty good luck catching catfish on doughballs, chunks of hotdog marinated in jello, garlic, pretty much the sky is the limit. I look for deeper holes, slower water, back eddys, etc. Been a rough summer here, after a historic spring flood, the river went back into flood stage in june, just got back in its banks, and now its going back up again. But I did pick up a nice 4lb cat yesterday on a Strawberry/cornmeal bait. Btw if your having problems getting doughballs to stick on your hook. Roll them into hot dog sized sausages, and try steaming them for 5 - 10 min. Cool and cut into chunks. |

a great alternative to chicken liver is beef liver its tuffer, has a stronger scent, and the blood stays in the liver longer. just go to your local meat market or grocery store meat counter and ask if they have any fresh beef liver. have them cut it into 1/2 inch lick slabs. then when fishing, cut of strips of liver and thread onto hook just like nightcrawler. the fish cant get the bait off no matter how hard they try. big fish!!! |

Hello, I know this is fairly old post, but hopefully this will help those faced with the same problems. I too have been recently fishing a small nearby river for catfish. My best advice is to bait up using whatever the the cats are feeding on. How do you know what they are feeding on? Easy, just tie up a worm and throw it in. Odds are whatever you catch the easiest and most of is probably what the cats are feeding on to. Here, its bluegill and sunfish. Even a small catfish will engulf a full grown bluegill. I adivise you stay away from dough baits and livers, use what they feed on and you'll get results. |

RIver fishing here in Indy, liver is the got to bait cause it's cheap and produces. Whenever I use liver I take sewing thread and wrap the liver once I get the liver on the hook.It holds the liver on pretty good and for the guys that cast across the world it's the ticket. When I buy liver I look for the liver with the most color in it more of a burgundy color, its tough and full of blood. Asquires2

I have tried everything but cut bait this summer and have only had luck on big gobs of nightcrawlers on a circle hook. I have always used stinkbait before and always had good luck, however it is not working this year. I tried chicken liver and no luck. Try night crawlers, sometimes you have to go back basics. GOD, THANK YOU FOR YOUR BLESSINGS.

I went this weekend with no luck. Didn't have any good bait so I bought some of those dried shad at walmart. Turtles wouldn't even eat them. I also had some night crawlers. I did get to use the new tip up noodle jugs I made. I caught One small bass. I think they are going to work good though. I put 20' of line and 5 hook on mine and weighted them to the bottom. I used 24" of 3/4" pvc and 11-1/2' of walmart noodle. For the weight I used 2-1/4" of 3/4" round rod (4.5 ozs) for the sliding weight. I had no false tip-ups from waves and such, just the small bass I caught triggered it. |

Hey everyone I am new to the boards as a member but i have been reading the forums for years. I was hoping to get one quick question answered if that is possible. I am at school near the Wabash River in Indiana. I'm used to fishing lakes for cats but I have never fished on a large river before. If its possible can anyone tell me the equipment and bait i should use. I have Shimano reels and ugly sticks wounded with 40lb trilene big game with a 4 ounce slip weight connected to a swivel. My leader is the same as my main line with a gamakatsu 3 ot circle hook. is this appropriate gear for my situation. I also used chicken liver inside pannie hose or cut shad in chicken blood. is this bait recommended for my predicament. thank you for your time |
