Yeah most commercial baits sold at walmart are trash. Now their are some like Danny Kings that I have heard catching more fish, but that and Sonny's are great selections in my point of view.

stephanie welcome to the BOC , some dip and dough baits work well in different areas. In some areas people have good luck with them in others the same bait don't seem to work. You may have to try several to find what works for you.

For the most part in my opinion they catch more fishermen than fish. They can be used effectively on trot lines but i think its due to the large concentration of the smelly goo in one area that brings fish in. But as a stand alone bait its is best to use then in cunjunction with cut bait... dip your cutbait in it for added attraction.

Chicken liver can be cured in the sun or tied on with thread or some use Lady's hose. Beef liver stays on better it will catch channels also. some people use hot dogs for bait and catch fish.
There is a post about curing liver in the member library

First off what Dale said about curing it is right on IMO. Cats are hitting up here at last, but pretty much ignoring everything but liver. So I've been scrambling trying to catch up.

Chicken liver, cut into bite sized pieces, laid out on a piece of waxed paper, sprinkled lightly with garlic salt, then table salt. 2-3 hours on one side, then flip and repeat. (front dash of a car parked in the sun will speed up the process)

Just tried beef liver for the first time yesterday. It had been frozen, but to my mind was worse than the chicken liver for staying on the hook. Almost pure mush but probably because it had been frozen.(suspect the outer membrane had been trimmed off).

Thurs I went out with my cured chicken liver and had 3 nice eating sized ones in a hour. Best fishing I'd had all year! Nothing big but that's ok. There is always next year for that big one :-)

Stick with it Steph, many of us here have handicaps of one sort or another. What defines us is NOT our handicap. But how we choose to live life in spite of it.

try this, it stays on the hook really well and after setting in the sun a few hours will stink to high heaven, and remember the longer in the sun the smellier.

Ingredients:

2 shad or 1 large one, if no shad then bluegill
one container of chicken liver
1 can of moist cat food... fish flavored
1 can of tuna packed in water / use the packed in oil if you cant get the bluegill or shad

Throw all this mess in the blender and blend til its as soupy as it can get. Pour in a big bowl or bucket... Add Quaker oats til it becomes thick and consistant enough to put on a hook. Remember it gets harder the longer the oats soak up the yummy catty goodness, so add a little then wait and add more to get the thickness you want so it stays on your hook. Also it can be rolled into small balls and used to chum an area because as it disolves the oats disapate and spread out in the slightest current. If no current throw some in an onion sack tied to a line and yank it periodically to release the stench.
Goodluck with this, I have used this on the bank, boat and trot lines with excellent success.
I live in WV and mainly fish for flattys but occasionally I will break out the recipe and nail some channels for fun. Oh and carp seem to like it if your into this but usually carp wont hang with catfish much.
Good luck.

I fish a pond that's about 3 acres and all I use is Catfish Charlie's blood dip bait with Charlie's worms or Doc's worms. I also replace the included treble hooks with a #1 Tru-Turn hook that way if the fish is too small he won't die. I still get great hook ups with the single hook. That's all I fish with except for the occasional liver but I seem to attract the turtles with that. If anybody has any home made recipes I would love to try it.

I did read your's Chriss, may try it any others.I went in the library here and found lots of neat recipes.Anybody else tested and proven. I only catch channels. I'm disabled and only have 1 fishin' spot accessible for me. I think the cat's are gettin' tired of the norm bait I use. Another ? does putting garlic on the livers deter turtles by chance, they are fun to fight but get annoying when I don't know if it's a cat bite or a turtles. This is a cool site glad I found some fellow "catters". I don't know about everyone here but my family thinks that cats are tastier than another species, I have to admit though pike is a close runner.

Dave welcome to the BOC , I spent the afternoon driving around a local lake and found two more spots that I can drive to the water. The cats did not do much , I caught two small channels and one drum. I was using fresh cut shad that I netted them off a bridge .

I've been working on my own bait this year and finally think I have my formula. It is catching lots of channels from 2 pounds to 5 pounds. It also is keeping some of the folks who want to slide in too close to cast into my hole away. Dang it stinks.

1 pound liquified chicken liver.
(You'll need a blender just fer bait)
1 pound limburger cheese
(soften in the sun. If you use the family microwave, you'll have to sleep somewhere else a day or two)
1.5 boxes finely crushed Wheaties
1/2 pound ground beef
1 cheap bottle dried ground garlic
1 package crumbled bleu cheese.
(Cats think it's classy)
1 Package instant mashed taters
(add as needed for consistency)
Corn Meal
(Again, add slowly and to desired consistency)
1/4 cup molasses
5 tablespoons vanilla
1 package strawberry jello

Mix it up in a large container. I advise wearing rubber gloves as the smell on the hands will end any romantic notions of those you love. Cover and leave in the sun 3 days.
Before you go to your fave catfish hole, check to make sure it is thick enough to form a ball and stay on a treble hook. It shound have a nice shine when balled up. If it is too loose, it will come off on the cast or while dropping to the bottom. The perfect bait will cast well and be firm enough for maybe 1 slow retrieve. If it is too thick, the cats won't always get the hook through the bait.

You'll know it's done if folks 8 feet away smell it within 3 seconds of removing the cover. You know it's great if they mumble, run away, or get ill. Good luck.
I feel close to God when sitting on the bank , in the dark, with a light southwesterly breeze. In that moment, all is right with the world. If I happen to catch a biggun, that is the bonus.
