As for rigs... I fish the Mississippi. I rig like this. Start by putting a bank sinker on the line without tying. Next put a splitshot about 2 ft. Up from the end of the line that will stop the bank sinker from comming off. Next put a circle hook on with a palomer knot. I use 8/0 gamagatsu circles. And depending on the current 2-8 oz. Bank sinkers.

As for wing dykes, If the current isn't too bad IDE ancor at the very tip and cast straight upstream. Or let it drift downstream. You will catch more fish upstream because the fish that are downstream aren't very active. That why there behind the dyke out of the current.

Oh and for what time of year to catch blues? The time of year when there's water! All year around. If u can find em with a fish finder wintering up, you'll wear your arms out.
