I think you have the right shrimp. I use shad, liver, worms, and shrimp. I stop switching when I start catching. If nothing works for cats, I switch to wheates or dough and try catching carp. If that don't work, I start using lures for bass. If I have to, I may use dynamite after all other things dont work.

I never let them run, I set the hook the second the pole starts down. If I don't hook them, I dont believe its a cat big enough for me to catch.

It sounds as if I need to start using some dynamite with the way my fishing record has started this year haha. Jess

Great post. I'm over here in Virginia and I can not put a finger on what is working. Shrimp gets some bites, but you never know what is going to bite the next day. |

Try some dead creek chubs, they seem to be working great for channels right now. Lots of eaters being caught. ;) BOC Squire AJ Whittle Serving the Community Since June of 2009 1 Time BOC Giveaway Winner

I think of it this way, the bodies of water: lakes, rivers etc.. are like different communities. So, like human communities, we are similar but have differences. example: Folks in community (A) eat all sorts of food, but prefer pizza folks in: community (B) like the same sorts of stuff as in community (A), but prefer burgers. Bait is like that with fish, this lake may like dough bait, but fish in the other lake like dip bait better... you need to find out what their preferences is in that lake cause shrimp aint cuttin’ it. Life's a garden.... dig it

i have never caught a catfish on shrimp. I have tried a few times myself. I think its just not that great of a bait. I use chicken liver or smoked hotdogs for bullhead and smallchannels. I use live bait on any fish over 5LBS. |

My #1 channel cat bait is fresh (never frozen) JUMBO shrimp from any store that sells them fresh. 1/2 lb is usually enough for a nights fishing. I do take off the tail, but leave the shell on, with the jumbo shrimp I will cut in half and have 2 baits. I keep them in a zip lock bag, and put them on ice in cooler . Kroger sells any amount you want, (I don't use frozen shrimp, I still catch some fish, but not as many..) This has saved me several times when friends want to me to have a fish fry.. on a weekend, Tight lines

In a river, I have never caught a catfish on shrimp. They just don't seem to bite it in river. But there is a manmade lake here with an outlet(spillway) and I have caught many big cats with shrimp in it. |
