Jabob, I don't think a catfish can tell the difference between a blue gill head and a shad head. On my lake the shad travel farther out into the lake than the blue gill. Watch the birds trying to get shad, watch the top of water. You can see a cloud on the depth finder. Catch up with them and use cast net.

Hey jacob I think that bluegill would work fine for the blues, but I would use them as cut bait. Most blues like dead bait I would use the head or tail. If you catch alot of small bluegill I would hooked it in the head and again through the body. Its hard to do with a circle hook , but it can be done. Good luck brother

Hey guys, I'm new to the site and I love it. I've read some really good adivce. I read that blue gill heads work for big blues (the biggest I caught was 15 pounds on a night crawler) so I figured I would try the blue gill heads to see if I could land a monster. I've had good luck hooking into a few, but they end up getting off before I get them in, so my question would be what size and type of hook should I use with this type of bait?

Greg Welcome to the BOC . I would not use a hook smaller than 7/0 . I like kahle hooks in 7/0 to 10/0.Blues are not hook shy , have plenty of the hook point outside the bait. good luck and let us know how you do.

Thanks for the reply! I've got a Bass Pro Shop not more than two miles away, so it's hook shopping time. I'm going to cast a line this weekend. I'll let you guys know how I do.

Well, not cats this weekend, not even a bite ... The circle hooks worked great though. My nine year old son who has trouble sometimes setting the hook caught a couple one and a half pound bass. The bass loaded up the pole and he reeled them in no problem. The look on his face as he fought them was priceless. A great day of fishing.

I just started learning how to throw a castnet myself. Its hard at first but practice makes perfect.. and it also requires quite a little strength to for 4 footers and on up. Welcome aboard the BOC Adam.

Marc u can get a cast net virtualy anywhere fishin supplys r sold. Bass pro, Cabelas, wal-mart, ect. There is a few things to remember tho, size of the net, and size of the neting on it. I like a 1/4 in mesh net so smaller bait dosent get there gills hung in it and die. As far as net size, in my experience the biger they r the harder they r going to b to throw for a beginer. try a 5 footer to start with, good luck.
