Do any of you Blue Cat fisherman focus on river Wing Dikes for Blues? What's better; the upside or downside of a dike? Thanks! “if it smells i'll eat it”

my absolute favorite structure for big blues .. during the winter at least .. upcurrent side .. everything on the other side is inactive trying to stay out of current .. plus you'd probably get snagged up pretty good trying to fish the wrong side If people focused on the important things in life there would be a shortage of fishing rods. Is it usually deeper? You wouldn't think the baitfish would hang out in those stronger currents. “if it smells i'll eat it”

We fish both sides. The currents really strong on the mississippi but sometimes we anchor at the tip on the upstream side. If you anchoring in front of the dike give yourself plenty of room in case of an anchor slip just in case. The blue in my profile came off the back of the dike in 50 feet of water a couple weeks ago. So I'd say either would be good. Three Rivers Tupelo Ar

The dikes I fish here on the TN river are deeper on the backside, but my bigger fish usually are caught on the front side. I would start on the front then move to the back side. |

This year has made me a firm believer in wing dikes. If you look at my profile, all my Big blues with the exception of the 50 lber came from the UPSTREAM side of wing dikes. As far as the downstream side, my biggest is only 20 lbs. Plenty of guys catch big ones there but I'm not one of them (yet). I do still fish them though. One other point is that all wing dikes are NOT created equal. Some upstream sides are real shallow, some are deep. Some have way too much current, other do not. River levels, of course, effect current speeds and how far out to the tip you can anchor. With the river like it has been lately (low), I can anchor all the way out at the tip of my favorite dikes. When the river is higher, I don't hesitate to anchor only half-way to the tip, if the current is too much. Just some suggestions... Shane |

I caught more fish on the upstream side but quite aways up on the mud flat/sand bar. I've never been able to get my bait to hold very well when bank fishing on tip. Fishing from the mud bank I've been able to cast close to the tip of the upstream side when I couldn't get on the wing dam and my biggest was a 54lber. My biggest blue to date 58lbs came off the mud flat above a wing dam the very first night I ever fished a wing dam. I helped Josh Haskell (bocaholic) bank a 65lber out of the downstream side last year and we also caught a mess of 20-30's off the downstream and upstream side. Most the 50+ pounders came around 1-3am of the mudflat above the wing dam. Stalking huge cats

Josh, Wing Dikes / Dams are the little dikes built along major rivers to help channelize them. They stick out into the river, forcing the water into a narrower channel. I've had better luck fishing the upside also, but I have pulled several fish from the downstream holes. And a couple of my better days this year came fishing the downstream side (not the scour hole, but the more protected, stable water along the downstream edge) while the river was on a rise of 1-2 feet. The fish seem to congregate behind the protection of the wingdam as the water starts to rise.

Are the wing dikes better when the water is higher or lower? Right now it's pretty low on the MO but, it's supposed to come up three feet and then somewhat stablize. “if it smells i'll eat it”

Do any of you guys fish on the upstream side from a boat? I fish the Missouri alot and wonder "how" you anchor and where on the topside of the dike. Also, do any of you fish the "line" dikes, the type that run parallel to the current? Been a while since I've been on here...nice to talk to you guys again. Donnie Caton / NW Missouri

Those line dykes require alot of sinker weight as the current is usually quit swift. I'm also curious about anchoring above the topside of the hole in swift water, sounds tough. Suggestions? Great site BTW |
