well i have not been doing too well this year with the flats but i did have something break 40lbs test after fighting it for around a half an hour( drug me into the rocks at dillon damn in ohio) using 12in crappie for bait. probably the best bait i have ever used. used that last year to catch a 45lbs 38lbs and a 24lbs shovel out of dillon. i guess it is because they are so soft for them

Unfortunately, my largest Flathead so far this year is 15lbs. Trying to beat my personal best of 30lbs here in Pittsburgh, PA.

Have y'all had any luck on Red finned or horned chubs? I have been using them for a month and caught absolutely nothing!!! I believe I read somewhere that they put a off a foul taste as defense but according to the walleye guys they are the best. Anyone know if Flatties hate em'? I know gar love em' lol.

oh my! great looking cat, Matt!
I'm jealous. The biggest cat I've caught was a couple weeks ago. 18 #. I wanna catch a giant like yours. :-) Happy fishing!
I have a question for all of you who catch catfish over ......say.....8 pounds. Do you ever eat the big ones? I've heard it's best to eat the 2-5 pound ones and let the big ones go.
Any comment from those who have tried them?

got my first flathead of the year on friday! a geat way to start the year @ 39lbs, 13oz! i had three lines out. 2 were big baits on baitcasters, and the 3rd was a tiny piece of cut-bait on a wimpy spinning rod hoping for some little guys. of course, this big girl took the little bait, resulting in a 25 minute battle! she measured 42.5", with a 27" girth. she was released to fight again. tight lines, everyone!flathead photo

hey guys,
I'm brand new here. I'm from Pittsburgh and not too many people fish for big cats here. The Allegheny River has given me a 48 in. We use a bunch of blue for bait here after sunset to avoid the pike. I have a theory(and I only prose it here because I have not yet figured out how to make a new post) what about using those $4.00 giant goldfish that you can buy at wmart for bait?

Max welcome to the brotherhood . I sometimes use goldfish when bait fish are hard to find. I use live shad(up to 12')bluegills , bullheads and crappie most of the time for Flathead catfish.

Were the gold fish you used the large ones? I'm really trying for the state record this year. I figure if I use bigger bait I'll snag me a bigger kitty. Plus those big goldfish are tough as nails and I'm hoping to cut down on my bait loss. I snagged my biggest with a bluegill. I pulled in a 31in with an 11in crappie and i think the bigger bait theory is sound.
If I'm a missin I'm probably fishin! Go ahead and leave a message man and I'll call you back when the fish hits the pan!

I have not used goldfish over 6".All the Flathead catfish over 50# I have been caught on bait under 12".Maybe some one that has used bigger baits will post how they worked for them.

The ABC's B is for Blue Cat, C is for Channel Cat, and F is for Flathead :-) personally I love my ABC's

No pictures, but our first time out this year "netted", between 3 of us in about 4 hours: 39" flathead, 32" flathead, 31" flathead, 18" flathead, 29" channel. Raccoon River, Iowa. Not bad.
