My 10 year old son and I set a trotline out in a small pond on our property yesterday mornin, we checked it late yesterday afternoon and had 6 turtles, nothin else. We re-baited it set it back out. We went early this mornin to check it and had a what we call a White River cat about 10-15 pounds on, got him up to the boat and he came off...bout made me sick. This is the first time my son has ever been trotlining, but I think I have him hooked now. Just had to vent.....*^%^%#@ |

I imagine he is hooked, turtles or not, lol. I used to to a lot of trotlining with my family when I was little and have lots of good memories. Its not legal here in Arizona so my son has yet to experience runnin' a trotline. I know he would be hooked though, just catching all of those turtles. Maybe you should learn how to make turtle soup, lol. Okie in Arizona

Turtle liver is good bait. The thrill of fishing is in the imagination. No matter the size of the one you just caught, there is always one bigger waiting to be landed, in the minds eye. Bloominton, Illinois

Speaking of turtles, I was at some pay to play catfish lakes around here last weekend and with five minutes a guy on our left caught a turtle, and on our right a guy caught a water mocassin. was pretty funny. |

It is a long line(usually braided nylon twine, or something of the like) that has somewhere around 25 hooks on average on it, spaced evenly, that is anchored at two points. You set this thing out in the water with all the hooks baited, and let it sit for 6 hours or more, and some fish will come along, bite the bait, and be stuck to the trotline. When you go back, you bring in the trotline, and you discover, "Oh, hey! Theres a catfish on here!" and you have a lazy way to catch cats (Message edited by barbel on June 21, 2005) When you need it, and you dont have it, you sing a different tune.

Its good for fillin' your freezer and its fun too. When you pull that line up and feel something heavy, you never know what it may be. May not even be a catfish. Okie in Arizona

More than you ever wanted to know about the White Catfish. WHITE CATFISH (Ameiurus catus) Common Names - forked-tail cat, catfish Description - The sides are blue-gray to blue-black and may be mottled. The tail is moderately forked, and the anal fin is shorter and rounder than that of channel or blue catfish. Whites have only 19-22 anal fin rays. The chin barbels are white or yellow. They have a blunt, more-rounded head, and they lack black spots on their body. Subspecies - None Range - In Florida, they are found statewide in rivers and steams and in slightly brackish coastal waters. Habitat - Usually found in slow-moving streams, river backwaters, reservoirs and ponds. They will tolerate a siltier bottom and higher salinity, and prefer water temperatures of 80 to 85 degrees. Spawning Habits - As with other members of its family, they are nest builders, and the male guards the young for some time after they hatch. Both parents help excavate the large nest, usually on a sand or gravel bar. Spawning occurs in the early summer when waters reach about 70 degrees. Feeding Habits - Although fish are their major food, whites also eat larval aquatic insects, small crustaceans, fish eggs and aquatic plants. They may feed at night, but are not as nocturnal as other catfish. Age and Growth - Whites grow more slowly than other catfish species. Fish as old as 11 years have been documented. They seldom exceed a weight of three pounds. Sporting Qualities - Among the catfishes found in Florida, the white is second only to the channel catfish in popularity. Live bait, especially minnows and worms, accounts for most caught whites, but they also will take cut and prepared baits. Since they can also be taken by commercial fishermen, no specific regulations currently apply but they are eligible for the "Big Catch" program. Eating Quality - An excellent food fish, whites are prized for their firm, white flesh. Records - World and State Record: 18.88 pounds, caught in the Withlacoochee River, Marion County, Florida, in 1991. source: http://floridafisheries.com/Fishes/catfish.html

It is a lot like jugging, which sure is fun too! I hear alot of people talking these things down, saying its "unsportsmanlike" but I completely disagree. Its not hurting the fish population and if it was it would be illegal as it is here in Arizona. Doesn't sound like it probably, but it is a lot of fun running a line and chasin' those jugs down. Okie in Arizona

Willisjj, is right...it is alot of fun and exciting. I like to use throw lines in small ponds, too. Just fix you up a line about 20 - 30 ft in length, put a weight on one end of it, a couple or several hooks, tie it to something on the bank and toss it out in the water, check every couple of hours or so. Great fun way to catch cats. |
