Here is a method that works well in Florida. First you need to go to your local fresh fish market. Tell them that you want the guts, heads, and other scrap for chum. I can usuall get a 5 gal buckett for about 5 bucks. It will be assorted fish, shrimp, lobster parts. I take it home and get some cheap stockings. put the assorted parts in the leg, tie it up, and pound it with a hammer. one stocking will give you about 10 to 15 bags. I then put the chum bags outside over night in a buckett. The next day they smell horrible. Then when I get to my fishing hole, i use an old crab trap with the doors blocked off to hold the chum. Set it out, wait about 15 mins, and then bottom fish with cut bait. You will run out of space before you run out of bait. Ive caught well over 40 in 3 hours. I usually throw the little ones back, and keep a couple of 5 to 10 pounders. |

Derek welcome to the BOC,if you can find shad they work better than liver for cat bait.Cut carp is b good bait also. Try live bluegills for flathead and bigger channels. Dale Finney, Wamego Ks.

Hey Derek I'm just North of you up in Fargo ND. Chunks of cut carp, sucker etc have always been one of my best baits. For smaller eating size cats its hard to beat nightcrawlers. If you can't find shad you might try Creek Chubs or any other smaller baitfish sized fish. Hang in there brother! |

I've been working on my own bait this year and finally think I have my formula. It is catching lots of channels from 2 pounds to 5 pounds. It also is keeping some of the folks who want to slide in too close to cast into my hole away. Dang it stinks. 1 pound liquified chicken liver. (You'll need a blender just fer bait) 1 pound limburger cheese (soften in the sun. If you use the family microwave, you'll have to sleep somewhere else a day or two) 1.5 boxes finely crushed Wheaties 1/2 pound ground beef 1 cheap bottle dried ground garlic 1 package crumbled bleu cheese. (Cats think it's classy) 1 Package instant mashed taters (add as needed for consistency) Corn Meal (Again, add slowly and to desired consistency) 1/4 cup molasses 5 tablespoons vanilla 1 package strawberry jello Mix it up in a large container. I advise wearing rubber gloves as the smell on the hands will end any romantic notions of those you love. Cover and leave in the sun 3 days. Before you go to your fave catfish hole, check to make sure it is thick enough to form a ball and stay on a treble hook. It shound have a nice shine when balled up. If it is too loose, it will come off on the cast or while dropping to the bottom. The perfect bait will cast well and be firm enough for maybe 1 slow retrieve. If it is too thick, the cats won't always get the hook through the bait. You'll know it's done if folks 8 feet away smell it within 3 seconds of removing the cover. You know it's great if they mumble, run away, or get ill. Good luck. I feel close to God when sitting on the bank , in the dark, with a light southwesterly breeze. In that moment, all is right with the world. If I happen to catch a biggun, that is the bonus.

can anyone help me out with some information on the channel cat habits in north central Florida? I fish lakes that are shallow (deepest is from 6-20 ft) and very dark stained water with cypress trees and swamp on the edges. Typical lake around here. things like when they spawn, where and on what do they naturally feed at night, shallow or deep, cutbait or live. I've had minimal success here. Caught some on chicken livers and some on dead shiners. how do I find them on a new lake? Ive got tons of questions and need to find these fish. I know they're there cause I hear about the old timers are catching them. |

Todd welcome to the BOC . I have not fished in Fla. I would start looking for channels on lake points, creek channels , anything that is different in the water. Also look for bait fish working the cats will be there feeding on them. When they spawn there I don't know, the channels spawn in june here in Kansas . Dale Finney, Wamego Ks.

thanks for the tips. I was just was looking at some topo maps of the lake here trying to plan a new strategy. What do you think about this? From what I've read the channel cats love crawdads and forage for them and anything else at night. So, from my experience all the crawdads I've ever caught were underneath something and, the main point being, located in relatively shallow water. So, does that mean that the fish are coming in shallow at night into the grass line and into the cypress trees to feed? We've been anchoring 10 yards off the grass and probably 25 yards off the nearest cypress tree line and casting out. The water is probably 5-6 feet at the grass line where we're anchored and about 2.5 ft. further back around the cypress trees. These trees are hollow underneath and full of places for fish to hide. Just makes me wonder, maybe I've been casting in the wrong direction all this time... ??? I've had limited success after 2 years fishing this lake with the biggest being a 9 lb. channel cat. Probably only 10 fish in 2 years. Oddly enough nothing under 4 lbs. |

Talk to the old timers who fish the lake. They will know better than anyone exactly what will work, and when, and what won't work, and where. |

thanks Bill yea, problem is, is that i don't actually see or know these guys who catch them. I only get the stories second hand from my neighbor who works with them. I've tried to get him to ask them for me, but those guys are so tight lipped, apparently they ain't talkin'. so, I guess what I need to do is quit searching for a miracle cure for the still bobber blues and quit my belly aching and get out there more often and find them myself. That's what it's gonna take. Far as I know, I think I'm the only person within a hundred miles who catfishes around here. I can go to any local lake anytime after dark and never see one person. Occasionally on a full moon night a bass fisher will go by. Anyway I thank ya'll for your time and if I ever do manage to find those fish, I'll let ya'll know. Still if anyone has any information (seen it, tried it, good, bad, true, false...... anything (about channel cats coming in shallow at night to feed, please let me know.... thanks |

Well after rereading your post I can see a couple of things that might help. First off, Catfish has taste bud's over its entire body, and fairly poor eyes, so they tend to be scent oriented more than sight. Also if you can locate any place water flows into the lake, that is probably going to be a spot to prospect carefully. Another spot would be any kind of a point sticking out into the lake. As fish will tend to concentrated as they look for food. Next depending on how many lines are legal in your area I'd split them. Try a live or cut bait suspended on one, and something smelly on the bottom on the other. All fish will tend to hunt up into shallower water at night. As the fear of predation from above is pretty much eliminated. Points, bars, channels between islands, anything that can concentrate fish into a smaller area is going to improve your chances. |

Ok everyone talks about Smell so to me I'm thinking Cut bait that has set out and Dip Bait should work. I have two places close by that I fish one place Turtles are a problem. The other is from a Dock water is deeper, less trouble with Turtles. I have had some luck with Dip Bait and Cut Bait but seems I have more on Chicken Liver but last night they would pick up the Bait and drop it.For some reason I decided to go to smaller hook and it worked better. Had a piece of Drum out nothing touched it,seems Cut Bait I get very few Hits but when I do its a Good Fish.I use Three Poles would you Bait two with Cut Bait and Cicken Liver on the third? hillman |

I use cheap chicken breasts on my jug and trot lines and always catch fish. Not real sure how it would do on a rod & reel though. Keystone7, September 24,25,26 2010 Our GOD is an AWESOME GOD!!

Up here on the Red River of the North (Winnipeg and points north), we've had fairly good success with frozen salted minnows. Tried shrimp but no luck, going to try corn next time out as well |

Karl I've also heard a lot of trotline types using Zote soap. I have some but have not seen much action on it. Geoffrey I've had fair luck catching smaller cats (6lb and under) on dough balls I made for catching Carp. I use a basic cornmeal base, and store them in a Molasses and Maple syrup sauce. |

Yeah, Ive heard of Zote. but this is a lye soap made with cheese in it and some other stuff. Ive used it quite often with good results for channels up to about 6 pounds. Also, I've used worms. put as many as you can on a hook with the ends hanging off. little pan fish will nibble at it, but when they stop it usually means a cat is coming after it. No no...that log has eyes.....

Hey everyone I am new to the boards as a member but i have been reading the forums for years. I was hoping to get one quick question answered if that is possible. I am at school near the Wabash River in Indiana. I'm used to fishing lakes for cats but I have never fished on a large river before. If its possible can anyone tell me the equipment and bait i should use. I have Shimano reels and ugly sticks wounded with 40lb trilene big game with a 4 ounce slip weight connected to a swivel. My leader is the same as my main line with a gamakatsu 3 ot circle hook. is this appropriate gear for my situation. I also used chicken liver inside pannie hose or cut shad in chicken blood. is this bait recommended for my predicament. thank you for your time |

Hey there fellow fisherman, new around here. Figured I would start by contributing to a very helpful thread. Here in the major rivers of the Panhandle of Florida peeled fresh shrimp are my #1 bait followed by stripped mullet for channels. Really fresh shrimp seems to work the best. Plus side is also if the fish arent eating, at least you got some shrimp. See ya out there. |
