As I remember it "evening secret" is a light that you stick in the water. Draws swarms of baitfish that draws swarms of preds, for nite fishing only I believe.

Remeber reading bout it a long time ago, supposed to be "real scientific" you could probably do search engine search an find it if it is still around for sale someplace

The baitfish are probably drawn too it like the mosquitos to a mosquito lamp, lol. I have heard about the light thing too. I personally think it may be because a lot of the baitfish are day-feeders and think the light is the sun or something. Whatever it is, I have heard it works excellently. And then of course with the large schools of baitfish, there are bound to be bigger fish that want to eat the little ones cruising around.
When you need it, and you dont have it, you sing a different tune.

We use lights for Speckled Perch fishin (crappie).
The light draws bugs, and critters that bait fish eat, which then draws bait fish and so on and so on.
If you are gonna catfish with lights, you have to cast outside of the light area, cats, and bass and such hang out in the dark waiting for stray bait fish. Speckled perch don't care, they come right into the light.
I catch more cats in the dark, they don't seem to like light at night too much. If the full moon is bright, we don't catch many either.
Just some humble observations.
