CHANNEL CATFISH FISHING

CHANNEL CATFISH - CHANNEL CATFISHING DISCUSSION:

Channel catfish are easily notable from all others, except blue catfish, by their profoundly forked tail fin. Contrasting flathead catfish, the upper jaw projects beyond the lower jaw. Coloration is olive-brown to slate-blue on the back and sides, greyish shading to silver white on the abdomen. Characteristically, numerous small, black spots are existing, but may be obscured in large adults. The anal fin has 24-29 rays, in dissimilarity to the blue catfish which continually has 30 or more rays in the anal fin.

FLATHEAD CATFISH FISHING

FLATHEAD CATFISH - FLATHEAD CATFISHING DISCUSSION:

Flathead catfish are characteristically pastel yellow, whereby the slang name yellow cat has taken hold in parts of the catfish community. There coloration ranges widely, but is normally light brown on the back and sides, and highly spotty with black or brown. The abdomen is typically pale yellow or cream tinted. The head is largely flattened, with a forward projected lower jaw. The tail fin is only to some extent notched, with a straight-edged appearance. This is totally opposite of the deeply forked tail fin of the blue catfish and channel catfish. Young flathead catfish may be very dark and almost black in appearance. Over 100,000 eggs can be laid in a golden egg mass which is safeguarded ferociously by the male flathead catfish, thus being a weakness to the species, as they are harvested easily by catfishermen participating in noodling. Adults are habitually solitary, each claiming a favorite river location classically in deeper water or beneath cover during the daylight hours. At night they reposition to riffles and shallow river areas to actively feed, where they hunt their favorite food source, live fish.

BLUE CATFISH FISHING

BLUE CATFISH - BLUE CATFISHING DISCUSSIONS:

The blue catfish are the largest freshwater catfish in the United States. Where mature schools exist, 40 pound specimens are not unusual. The James River is becoming a premiere trophy blue catfish environment, and is not uncommon to catch 30 Pound plus specimens. More often than not the largest blue catfish are caught on trotlines, some of which have landed blue catfish specimens in excess of 100 pounds. Die hard hands on approached rod anglers have landed specimens in excess of 124 pounds. Blue catfish have a forked tail and are from time to time very comparable to channel catfish. The quantity of rays in the anal fin is as a rule 30 to 35 and color is usually slate blue on the back with shading to white on the belly. Blue catfish are predominantly big river catfish feeding in main channels, tributaries, and impoundments of large river systems. Blue catfish pursues a diverse diet, but it will consume prey fish at an earlier time in life. Blue catfish commonly attain weights of 40 to 60 pounds and may reach weights well in excess of 100 pounds. Early stories about the Mississippi river report blue catfish being seen at fish markets larger than 300 pounds in size. It is widely assumed, that a 150 + pound specimen exist in a river system and will be caught in the very near future. Recent events have made catfish anglers rethink handling practices with world class catches, as the mortality rate for these specimens have been high.

CATFISH AND CATFISHING BAITS

An extensive diversity of natural catfish baits and commercially prepared catfish baits are used when catfishing. Many catfish fishermen prefer to use multiple baited catfish poles to target active feeding catfish, while others use large live baitfish in an all or none approach. The type of fishing you are doing, “trot lines, limb lines, jug fishing, rod and reel” and the catfish targeted, “Flathead Catfish, Blue Catfish, Channel Catfish” will dictate in the majority of cases what is used. Some of the more popular catfish baits are: Night crawlers - Cut Bait from a wide variety of baitfish, either chunked or filleted – Fresh Water Clams – Shrimp – Crawdad Tails – Catalpa Worms – Shad Gut Pockets - Extensive Variety of Store Bought Food Baits – Shad – Blue Gills. Blood Bait although sometimes difficult to find a source, has been touted as an excellent drift fishing catfish bait. The catfish bait multiplicity is endless, go with what you have confidence and have fishing fun!
