Do any of you guys use trotlines? I did for awile but lately I've been using rod&reel. My lines have a mere 2-4 hooks. Here in Iowa we can only use a total of 15 hooks. |

Mike, Here in Iowa we can only use 15 hooks on a total of not more than 5 lines. In other words, we can run 1 line with 15 hooks, 2 lines with 7 and 8 hooks etc. That makes it a little harder to set diddy poles cause the most you can put out is 5! My wife has a license so we can set out 10. I'll run lines a few times through the summer, usually in August when the water is low and warm. The flatheads hit like crazy during that time. Wolf There's one in every crowd, for crying out loud, why was it always turning out to be me?? |

Back in the 1980s, I did a lot of trotlining, but I haven't done any since then. I don't have the time to check them every day, plus, I don't care to trotline alone. Jerry |

I run trotlines pretty regular. SC allows the recreationl fisherman three lines of no more than fifty hooks on each line, for a total of 150 hooks. I enjoy it immensley. I usually bait with cut shad, eagle claw 4/0 circle hooks. I make my own lines. The main line is parachute cord with the trots made from 108 lb dacron. the lines are fed from a jump box which i mount on a half inch rod at waist heightwith a wing nut, which makes it real easy to bait and feed out as i lay it. |

this is a photo of a jumpbox mounted on my boat. I can also mount it at the back, depending on where i wanna lay it from

Chris, you might want to do a little more thinking about that 500 hook line. There are very few places where you can put out a line that long and have it all be in productive water. If you make up 5 100-hook lines, you can always string them together for a 500-hook line, but it gives you the option to put out 5 100-hook lines, or a 200-hook line and a 300-hook line. Just a thought.

Jerry, sorry for the misunderstanding we make all of the lines 100 hook (well 96) that's how many will fit in a rack. We attach each rack to each other depending on current and bottom structure.I guess I should have said building 5 more lines. What kind of area do you look for to set your lines? I always liked to set mine right in among stumps & snags next to deep water. Jerry |

jerry, we've been haveing better luck on the flats. 10-15 ft deep right off of the channels. I've noticed when I get hung up in the snags I catch small flatheads, and there wont be another fish for several hooks. I got several questions for all of you pros out there. First is what is a jumpbox? Second is how do you keep the cats on the trotline hooks?????? When I check my lines all i seem to get is two or three fish and 47 empty hooks with no bait or fish. Could it be that the hooks are to small or the line to tight or to limp whats the matter with me? Please help me before I go out of my mind. |

I also need some advice from yall on keeping a trotline organized when not in use. I use beer cans but is there a better way to keep the hooks and leaders organized? |

I use an old styrofoam minnow bucket with a lid. I cust a notch out of opposite sides of the lid and wrap the line around it. The drop lines just get stuck around the edge of the bucket. I keep extra weights etc. in the bucket so they are right there handy. HAUGHTON, LA |

Justin get some 4/0 circle hooks and that should solve your no fish problem. That is if little bait stealing blue gill are not getting it first. If that is the problem try putting your lines out as close to dark as is possable they are less active then. What kind of bait are you using, try cut bait on them circle hooks cut bluegil, shad, creek chubs, skip jacks, and I think you catch will improve greatly. scifi Almo Kentucky Live long and prosper my friend. |

I use jump boxes like Jtrew drew. They are made using 1"x4"s 26" long. I make the slots with a hand saw about 1" apart, making 25 hooks on each side. I staple screen mesh on the bottom to allow the lines to drain after use. I also wet my lines very well before I set them. It make the 'jump' better. I bait all the hooks with cut bait before I set them. I keep weights and floats handy and rig them with trot line snaps to connect them quickly as the line pays out. After baiting it only takes 10-15 mins to pay out a 100 hook line. The real key to this system is how you load the line in the box. After setting the trot in the slot the mainline needs to be piled evenly thoughout the box, else it could snag humps in the line and jerk out parts of the line out of order. A REAL MESS. Hope this helps. |
