I'm moving to SE Oklahoma, ten miles south of Wilburton. I've been told that I will be hunting in a bushy location. QUESTION: What rifles are most commonly effectively used in that area for Deer and Hoggs? A friend mentioned that maybe I should get a Winchester 94 30/30 with a 20" barrel (plain-jane-model), and someone else mentioned a Winchester 410 with a 24" barrel (slugs). What are people using these days? What is the most popular caliber for deer & hoggs? Thanks. |

If you want strictly a brush gun try the Marlin Model 336 in 35 cal. or Marlin's 45/70. Both are lever action rifles. I prefer the Marlin over the Winchester lever action because you can mount your scope right on top of the Marlin action. You have to mount the scope on the side of the action on Winchester. Besides in my opinion Marlin is a better made gun. (Message edited by Jesse168 on January 25, 2005)

I made a free standing shot with a Ted Williams 30/30 at near 100yds on a 300# plus hog. Aimed a bit high and right through the neck, behind the head. You could hear the bullet hit, WHOP!!! and down it went. On the larger hogs, I'd suggest a shot forward of the shoulder, lung, or head shot. There's alot of thick plate in that shoulder. That Ted Williams gun sold by Sears was a Marlin made, I think. Much bigger than a Winchester. It has side ejection like the Marlin. Feels like a rifle in your hands, unlike the small size of the Winchester.

Be careful with the 45/70 cal. It gets meat on both ends. A friend of mine has a Marlin Guide gun in that cal and he said it had a hell of a kick. Beandaddy

yeah russ that thing is made by magnum research, the same one that does desert eagle. as for caliber, i use .30-06 for hogs. i have a weatherby bolt gun that's the daytime gun, and a remington 7400 semi auto for nighttime hoggin. for a while there i was using my sks, and it has plenty enough knockdown for pigs, just limited range. as a 'brush gun' goes, though, it has plenty of punch to knock a hog down. great intermediate cartridge! -jordan |

My Marlin 45-70 isn't a Guide Gun, but it is a sweet shooter. I only find it uncomfortable shooting from rest only. Standing, kneeling, or sitting it's not that bad, but I am a glutten for punishment!

Wow Paul I did not know there is a Hog population in Wilburton! I might have to attempt to get in on some of that!!! I wonder what the public hunting land is like? I have been to the area fishing a bunch of times. You will not be dissapointed in the fishing around Wilburton. The Euafaula dam has some of the finset fishing Oklahoma has to offer in reguards to Blues, Flats, Channels, Striped Bass, Sand Bass, and I have done well crappie fishing there as well....have fun! |

Have any of yall thought about trying the 500 mag? It has plenty of knockdown power at both ends. I saw a friend of mine shoot a 130lb hog at 20 yards with one and it knocked the pig off its feet. Literaly. |

My son got a really nice hog (250#) in December with an H&R 20ga slug gun. He got it with an off-hand shot at 60yds with no problem. Next year he wants to try for one with my T&C 50 cal. |

i just can't justify either the cost of the revolver or the ammo in the 500 s&w mag, let alone recoil! i can shoot my .44 mag super blackhawk hunter all day comfortably, and only spend $20.00 for a box of (50) 240 grain softpoints. that's plenty of power for anything in this great country, be it a big hog in the woods, a black bear in the mountains, or a burglar in the living room! buddy of mine got a super redhawk in .480 ruger. plenty of knockdown power as well, but the ammo price is rediculuous and the recoil is pretty stout. whatever works for you is the best thing to use, though! -jordan |

I was told that a 410 shotgun with pellets has more knock down than a rifle up to 30/06. Not good for distance over 60yds. |

The pellets are about a little bigger than the size of pea gravel and 9 to a shell. Better than a slug because it has more spread pattern. |

I've a 444 marlin levergun i have for brush hunting and recommend it highly. I'd shy away from a 410, its muzzle velocity is only 1300 fps w/ 000 compared to the ought six w/ a 180 gr. bullet at around 2500 at 100 yards. The 30-30 and the 444 both have around 2250 fps at 100 but the 444 has 400 lbs more energy at that distance and a significantly heavier slug. i have both an ought six and a 444 and taken a lot of game with both. im partial to the ought six but if your collection needs a brush gun the the 444 is the way to go, IMHO. - - - cq cq de km5qf qrz?

that .30-06 has a hell of a lot more knockdown than any .410 bore out there, thomas. i shot a doe a few years back at 30 yards and the entrance wound was as big as my hand. the bullet exploded and left 3 golf ball size exit wounds. you'll never see a .410 with that kind of performance. HOWEVER with the right loads and hunting situations, the .410 is also a good deer caliber. i have killed a few deer and varmints with the rifled hollow point slug. -jordan |

Believe it or not I just took two hogs this weekend at at 150 yds with my .17 hmr. Both were headshots. "Hold my beer and watch this!" "Cross Into The Blue" "If guns commit crimes, all of mine are defective."
