Ok here is one for the books. Went hunting Saturday and after sitting in my stand till to dark to see I climbed down the tree and was getting out of my stand when BAM my right leg got hit hard and almost knocked out from under me. There beside the tree I was in was a 5 foot 7 inch Timber Rattler. I almost broke the stock on my 50 cal muzzle loader when I hit the snake with it. I was lucky I was wearing my snake proof boots, and by the way they work great only got a burse. But the snake must have slithered up next to the tree while I was up there and just settled in the under brush. He never rattled letting me know he was there. Here in southeast Georgia it is still warm and the snakes are still active, so ya’ll please be careful out there, you never know what will happen in the woods, and if your looking for some snake proof boots Rocky makes some fine ones if you ask me…..

Jim....

Im in south Georgia too and this is the time of year that I see more snake movement every year. I think its due to the shorter daylight and the cooler weather and they move more often to find the warmest spots on the ground or where the sun is shining more. I used to bow hunt a lot and September/October was mosquitoe and snake time !!!!
Good thing you had the boots or it could have been a bad situation for ya. Ive only been struck at once in my life and that was during a dove shoot in a peanut field and was also a rattle snake and it also never gave a warning rattle. It actually hit a five gallon bucket I was carrying instaed of me. The only thing that I could come up with for his miss was the fact that the bucket had been sitting in the sun and was much warmer than my leg and he struck at the heat of the bucket. At that time I didnt own any snake boots or chaps but soon bought a pair of snake chaps.

Glad things turned out ok.. be careful out there....
Sam

Goodness Jimmy I am sure glad your ok. I also saw a snake on the front porch one night. Went outside and put my hand on the railing and saw something move to the left of my hand. It wasn't a rattler but a corn snake. It sure was a pretty looking snake. Was about 2 1/2 foot. I just watched it move on out . I wasn't hunting but the snake was lol.

Season Came in on the 9th here. Here is the best part I got both of them with one shot. Hit the Big doe and never saw the yearling next to her until I came down out of the stand and went to get her. The yearlin was 5 feet from the big doe.
