Guys listen up. Ive been hunting before. Ive shot guns before. but havent gotten the chance to put the two together much. Ive got whatever type of gun i want to use, any you can think of for deer im sure. and ive got about 40 acres of human free, family owned for 100+ years, one road in one road out, trailor with heat, beds and kitchen to go hunting on for the weekend. plenty of deer or wild turkey. What i dont have is money, or much knowledge. but im sure some of you are thinking, man he has all that and doesnt hunt!? id kill for that! so i want to take advantage of my land. My mom, her sisters, and my sister and myself all have parts on the deed. My brother's good friend is there all the time, and he is a good guy, loves to hunt too. But im thinking since A. I dont have alot of money this might keep the freezer stocked for a long while. how much is it to process a deer? can you totally process it yourself? I know a few people who do it and have all the tools to do such. but i dont know the first thing. I can shoot it and get it out of the woods. id just settle for a doe, just for food on the table, dont need the buck, but it would be nice. Once i went bow hunting, i get totally camo'd, deer came right down beside me, i actually stood up and shot it. never saw me. felt like a ninja or something! ha! but the arror was a junker my buddy gave me and didnt fly straight, never found the deer wasnt a kill shot. help me out guys. Hope for the best, plan for the worst

Nick find ya someone that does there own and ask to watch or even help.I been doing it for a long time with just a couple of good knifes and a meat grinder.Bone out all my meat and grind my own burger.Save ya about 75 to 100 dollars by doing it your self. Most deer hunters are more than willing to help out a new hunter.

I agree with Tom. The best way to learn is to do it. Find someone who can do it and invite them to go hunting with you. Tell them they have to show you what to do if you kill one. They have a place to hunt and you have a teacher. If they kill one and you don't, help them process theirs. Will fish for food !!

Nick, Around here processing fees are around $45-$50. This is for skinning, steaks, roasts and grind with fat added. They will freeze it and takes about 7-10 days for completion. Field dressing is extra (something around $20) which is way too expensive and if you can gut a squirrel or catfish you can do an acceptable job. As Tom said, a couple of good sharp knives, a meat grinder (ebay for +/- $10)and a roll of freezer paper is a good start. A source of cheap meat trimmings for added fat to the grind is also nice. 100% pure venison is too lean to fry so you MUST add something. We have used bacon end pieces and trimmings and got good results. The rest is as easy as filleting a fish. Try to keep the hair off the meat and trim as much of the deer fat off as it turns rancid fast and is the greatest source of off tastes. Keep the meat/carcas clean and as cool as possible as soon as possible. The main thing is to be reasonably prepared prior to needing to process one. The worst thing is to let it spoil while 'searching/gathering' the tools. Good luck and don't fear it. You really can't screw it up. Secret of life - temperance and moderation Dickieboy Jackson, TN

Nick we also pay $45 here but I do my own also. even make my own sauage. Just a meat grinder and a couple of sharp knifes. I like to cool mine in a frig I have on the back porch for a couple od days before I start cutting it up but that is just the way I do it.
Anything I can for the Brotherhood and the family members Thank you, Jim "Gator" Hudson

Ditto. If you have the time and need money-maybe a processor will hire/train you. They get swamped during the gun season.Spend this year learning and saving-next year you will be set. Processing is about 65$here. 20$ for gutting???That should be done long before getiing to the butcher-thats why its called field dressing. |

Nick, I see you're from Greenup!!!!!!!! I've actually turkey hunted around there back in 2000. Awesome turkey hunting to say the least. Can't remember the guys names I hunted with, but one of them worked for the fire department there in town. I'll remember it tomorrow I'm sure and let you know. Great folks and some excellent hunting opportunities. I would recommend watching someone process a deer. You can learn alot from watching someone and actually having them show you how to do it yourself. Once you get the hang of it, there's nothing to it. You can do one yourself, from start to all of the meat being wrapped and in the freezer in less than an hour and a half. I've cleaned enough deer in my day to last a lifetime, and still get asked from people that know how to do them to help out and as long as the beer's free and their supper when I'm done I'm all for it!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!! Good luck and God bless. |

Well, they took out my link. Anyway, go to any search engine and type in "field dressing deer" and you will bet all sorts of files and sites that show how to do that part. The first one I found on Google had actual photos of someone field dressing the deer with steps. There are also several books that might be availabe through your local library to check out about harvesting and cooking wild game. Again go to any search engine and type in "butchering deer" and you will get the names of several books that you could check out free from any local library. Tons of info on the net if you dig for it a little bit. Good luck. |
