I was going to the backside of our dam to check the water out yestersday and saw a great buck. The woods are surrounded by a baseball park and houses and is only about 100 maybe 150 acres or so but around the dam area it is pretty thick and secluded except for the few fishermen that drive down the old powerline to get to the dam. There is a lot of "suburban" deer trapped in that 100+ acres and last year I saw a great 10 pointer back there in November. This one I saw yesterday was standing maybe 60-70 yards from the dirt road on the power line and stood there motionless the whole time while I got the camcorder out... I actually looked around thinking maybe the game wardens had set up a decoy deer to catch out of season hunters and poachers then when I moved the truck again it bolted and ran back into the woods. I meant to video the buck but apearantly I hit the wrong button (new camcorder) and took 1 still shot instead of the 2-3 minutes I thought I was filming it. I was sooo pissed when I went to view it afterwards and realized I had not filmed it at all.. and I was zooming in real close and would have been a great video of the buck. I didnt even realize I had took a still shot until last night when I was reading up on the cam and it struck me what I had done...lol I checked the memory stick and sure enough.. there was the still pic I had taken by accident. The 10 pointer I saw last year(about 30 yards from the same trail as this one)wasnt near as tall of a rack but was several inches wider. We have always seen does back there and a few little scrub bucks but until last year we never realized there was nice bucks in there so close to houses and ball parks and traffic and all. So here he is.. the brow tines are very short.. esp. compared to the rest of the rack and the deer looked to be a very young buck but he has future possibilites for sure. Take care... Ya need someone to come up there and help ya hunt him give me a shout..... I made a horrible mistake last year with a camcorder while hunting myself. I was sittin out in my stand and the sun was just breaking out on a beanfield I was sittin on. My stand sittin back in a dark pocket against a slough where a deer run(looked like a interstate)runs out bout 150 yards from me. There was six deer that had come out and I had scoped them and it was a lil 6 pointer, 4 pointer and 4 does. Well I'd gladly taken one of them but the farmer I help don't want us taken does or lil ones, as all the neighbors don't either. Anyways, I picked the camcorder up and started taping them they were bout 400 yards from me in the field and another one came out. I was looking at him through the lil screen on the camcorder and never could see horns on him. I coulda swore it was a big ol doe. He slowly walked out and literally walked south of me out to where the others were. After bout 10 minutes of taping I went ahead and put the camcorder down. Picked up my rifle and glass them, Man ol Man I coulda passed out. They were still out there bout 400 yards but he had G2s like a goal post. A great 10 with a small kicker. Four hundred yards is a bit far for me to shoot so he just slowly walked south with the rest of the deer. I picked that dang ol camcorder up and taped him until even at 750 yards at the back of the field. When i got back to the house, I hooked the camcorder up to the t.v. and even at 750 yard i could see the horns on his head. I hunted him the rest of the year and seen him a few times but never got a decent shot on him. I got to take the one on my profile so I can't complain. But hes still out there for this year. I got a good look at one this year and i think its him. I jumped him up while spraying the field. I'll never look at another one through the camcorder before scoping them first. Lesson learned. |

DH... Thanks for cleaning up my posting clutter...lol Tea... give a guy a break why dont ya !!??...lol Danny/Kimber... I havnt shot a buck with a gun in over 8 years now but I have filmed a lot and several that were shooters. Ive filmed 6-7 that were as nice or better than this one and tons of younger bucks and does. I enjoy being able to go home and watch the videos and have learned a ton from the tapes. You get to notice things about the deers reactions and habits and all when you can watch it over and over again on tape and without the excitment you feel while in the stand and he is in front of you. I guess I got the same way about Big Bucks that a lot of yall are about big catfish... CPR !!! I really havnt hunted in the last 2 years due to a couple of ruptured disk in my lower back 2 years ago then looseing my land last year and where Ive seen these couple of bucks is actually in city limits and has too many houses and people around it to shoot a firearm anyway.. even if ya could get permission to hunt it. This land is on my to work and I drive thru it going to the dam on our river 2-3 times a week while drinking my coffee and just to check the water and look for deer. I carry my camcorder in my truck at all times as Ive seen and filmed lots of deer from the road or truck and like Sunday morning .. you just dont know when ya might see something worth filming. In fact I drove down that same powerline this morning drinking my coffee and saw a doe with a small very young fawn and a little spike buck but didnt bother getting the cam out for that. Sad thing is for the last few years Ive had to pay 500-600 dollars a season to be part of a land lease to hunt on and now Im seeing better deer in town on this land then I did on my own lease....lol Anyway... Someday I might shoot another buck if it was a really nice one or was at the age that he is starting to decline but for now I get plenty of satisfaction just filming them and knowing that if I had wanted too I could have taken him and knowing that those genetics will be passed on to future nice bucks. Take care and good luck this season yall... Sam

Sam, Glad to see another brother out there that likes to use a camcorder. I take my wifes everywhere. As far as the hunting and fishing, I video it all. That way I can share it with my family and friends. I was hoping to get enough to make a tape of fishing and one of hunting. The last four bucks I have taken I've gotten all on film before season.Three I've gotton on film while taking them and there pretty decent. I sure do know what ya mean bout the prices of leases. I help out on the farm during planting and harvest, so he lets me hunt. If I didn't I wouldn't be able to afford it. Its big business round here. Right south of where I'm hunting its a staggering 1500 dollars a year. Round here in Arkansas with the four point rule on most refuges. Those are becoming great hunts too. Take care...Danny |
