Anyone ever used one of the motion activated game cams? My wife got me one for my birthday. I put up a feeder about 3 weeks ago and i had a bear knock it down (pretty sure it was a bear), so i cabled it to a tree and i found a black hair on the cable the other day. Any suggestions about how to set it up, as in distance and how high on a tree?

There are no bears in these parts, but I put mine about waist high and about 6-10 feet from where I expect them to be. It has taken some good pics. I have pics of a BIG buck that has only been seen by the camera. He is roaming about 80 acres that 3 of us hunt and noone has seen him in person! HAUGHTON, LA

Here is a link to a post with a couple of my pics. The big buck pics toward the end of the post were taken by my video camera out my back door. I put the game cam up the next day and got some better pics of him! http://brotherhood-of-catfishermen.com/c gi-bin/discus/board-auth.cgi?lm=10630667 71&file=/38286/283425.html HAUGHTON, LA

I was thinking about building a rought angle-iron/expanded metal cage to go around mine at first just in case it is a bear and it gets curious. Wouldn't take much for it to waste $80.

I built a steel box to go around my game cam. I also welded a big chain to the box so I can lock it up. I don't worry to much about the animals breaking it, I worry about a thief stealing my camera. Will fish for food !!

This thread has been dead for a while....Anyone else really into trail cams? I got my first one about 8 months ago and it was a 35mm steath cam. Sold that and got a Moultrie Digital in november. No i am building my own digital. Theres a really great resource for building and buying parts to do it yourself. The main reason i bought a digital was because the price is so high to just buy a digital by itself, let alone building it into a motion activated camera. Im converting a Sony DSC-P20 that i got on ebay REAL cheap. It will make my 2nd of that same model, and i am going to modify it first in case i mess up. If it all works, i'll have the whole setup for under $100. Thats almost as much as you can buy some of the cheaper 35mm cams for. My first 35mm cam cost $90 from bass pro.

Jon, I have been reading up on another site about building a digital gamecam also. I plan on using a Sony P-41 camera. I have also been thinking about building one of the video gam cams also. Jon, What board are you using for your gamecams? HAUGHTON, LA

I ordered a pixcontroller board yesterday and i picked up a P41 on clearance today to use instead of the P20. We are probably reading the same website about building cams, its pretty much the original. I better not mention the web address but its "JH". Lots of knowledge there and Bill from pixcontroller has been outstanding thus far. His boards are cheap too.

Yep, That's the same site. I'll have to look at the pixcontroller board. The only one I have really looked at is the BG1. HAUGHTON, LA

The pixcontroller seems like the way to go. The whole kit for the p41 is around $82 shipped from them. That doesnt include the case, but i got one on ebay for $20 shipped. After all is said and done, i should have around $260 in the setup. Just add a dot com to the end of pixcontroller and look and see what they have to offer. I'll let you know how it does when i get it.

James, i got my pixcontroller board in yesterday and started assembling my camera. Its alot of fun so far. I was worried at first because my wiring didnt seem to be working, but after i let the camera set for a few minutes everything worked fine. Found out the board has a 1 1/2 minute warm up period before it will work. I got a 256 meg memory stick for the P41 on ebay for $34 should be here tuesday, camera should be almost finished today, depending on finishing touches with the camo.

So, How tough was the wiring, soldering, etc.? That is the main thing I am worried about. I have never done it before. HAUGHTON, LA

James, it wasnt really hard at all. The hardest part of the whole deal was probably scraping the plastic off the flex cable. I did have a little trouble thinking the control board wasnt working right, but i didnt let it warm up long enough. Jordan, Im gonna make a post in the general forum with pictures. Check there.
