I saw this in a movie today, Red Dawn with Patrick Swayse, Charlie Sheen. Its about WWIII and these kids hide in the mountains...anyway Swayse and Sheen are brothers who hunted all their life, they are hunting deer with a younger kid and this kid shoots his first deer ever. The two brothers tell the guy, since its his first deer he has to drink a cup of the animals WARM BLOOD??? They tell him their father made them, his father made him and so on. The kid drinks the blood and they tell him that once you drink it part of you changes and you'll always be different from then on....woowee pretty wierd!

Has anyone ever heard or participated in this way of passage?

Bryan?

it was a peice of the heart that was required here in the hills egg, there are various customs here and around the world, either heart blood or part of the heart,to honor the animal whose flesh will sustain you and to give part of the animals strength and stamina to the hunter, many societies beleive that if you consumed a part of your enemys heart you absorbed their courage and strength, this honor was confired upon the remains of only the most formidable , brave and strong enemies.prob more info than ya asked for, lol, but there she is

Egg that is an awesome movie, first time you saw it? We have a tradition here (SC) that requires me and my family to eat meaty portions of a deer we take one of two ways. First is fried, the other is grilled. We also do the "Dump the bucket" for you first deer. My wife got a mouthful on her first one, not good trust me. I have it on video to!

Wow JPB, I had no idea, thanks for the info! What did you have to do on your first deer?

Tim, I have seen it quite a few times but I saw it on DVD for 10 bucks today and had to have it! Did you know that Red Dawn holds the record for most people killed in one flick! lol

Some of the hunting clubs I have belonged to if it was your first deer they wiped blood all over your face and clothes. If you missed a deer everyone would get to cut your shirt tail. There wasn't much shirt left some times lol.

It's an old Russian custom to eat the liver first. Preferably shortly after bagging it. Seen it, and done it. Doesn't taste any better than beef liver. I wonder if it'd be better cooked, hmmm?

Well I think I like Tim's tradition the best. Maybe thats just me.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you give him a way to get out of the house for a lifetime.

The Sioux used to eat part of an animals liver fresh and raw,e.g. still hot from the kill.

Ya, I think that is why they called him Crazzy Horse, when in fact he should have been called Mad Cow. If you eat raw meat all your life you body builds up inzines to handle it. If you just start, I think your asking for trouble.

I'm with you Michael!! There are bugs out there in raw meat now that they haven't even named yet. The buffalo and deer at home on the range back then were not chowing down on all the insecticides, pesticides and hormones that flood our systems now-a-days. COOK IT WELL BROTHERS!!!!!! Let the wild critters that are out there amungest them have the raw meat. ---Rod---
