They are domestic hogs turned wild and are all over Texas. I have rice fields about 5 minutes from my house and they are thick in the woods behind these fields. We trap em because hunting is not allowed. Good eating!!

MY SON AND HIS FATHER-IN-LAW HUNT THEM WHEN THE WEATHER GETS COOLER THEY HUNT WITH PLOTT,AND B&T WITH PIT CROSSED ON AIREDALES FOR CATCH AND HOLD DOGS. THEY CATCH 5-6 A WEEK. KEEPS ME IN PORK AND SAUSAGE AND SOME CATFISH BAIT. THEY ARE PESTS HERE IN THE PEANUT AND CORN FIELDS. I HAD SOME IN MY BACK PASTURE BUT THEY MADE 4 TRIPS AND CAUGHT MOST OF EM. THE FARMERS PAY THEM TO CATCH THEM IN THEIR FIELDS. THEY WILL EAT GOATS CALVES AND ANYTHING THAT THEY CAN FIND.

I'm in Lampasas. One day back in Dec I went to check my coon trap under the deer feeder, When I stepped out of the truck I thought I heard a "Grunt". My heart skipped a couple beats 'cause it had been a long while since I heard that sound. I stopped and listened for a minute while thinking " I've been running a game cam on & off for over a year, never had pics of hogs, never seen any signs of hogs, There's no hogs in this area, The door was tripped on the coon trap that was hidden in a cedar tree, probably a big "boar" coon" Hind sight 20/20 I'm glad I left the door open. I walked the 20 yds to the trap and it was empty. I flipped it over and was shaking the corn out when I heard a branch break behing me, I looked back and there was a VERY P.O.'d LARGE HOG charging my direction~! I don't recall how many steps it took to get back to the truck, I vaugely recall 3 while yelling explicative's that makes sailors blush. I jumped in my truck slamming the door behind me loading slugs in my 12Ga (I was headed to hunt hogs on Ft Hood).

I couldn't find her anywhere so I slowly opened the door and waived the barrel under the truck... No pig. I scanned the area again... No Pig??? I eased out of the truck (leaving the door open on purpose this time) and crept thru the grass quietly back to where I last saw her come out of the cedars, I could hear several but couldn't see them, I worked my way around to a clearing and I could see lil' ones hiding in the cedars and brambles, One large pig stepped out @ 75 yds, I ligned up but passed risking such a long shot. I guess she got nervous and the whole herd fled back the other way. 17 hogs and a month later I finally caught her! Trust me I very clearly had a mental snapshot of what she looked like!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/sh ank/Scan0021_0030.jpg
She was not real happy to see me again! This time I gave her lead poisioning! When we took her to the locker plant whe was dressed at 150lbs, had a 3" cutter sticking out the left side and a broken on the right and evidence she recently had piglets. we caught 1 with her and the other 4 over the following 3 days.

Russian? Razorback? Yes she looked like both and had the temper to go with it. Most hogs in this area still have a lot of domestic characteristics, Not this one. As described up ^, long lean & MEAN! big shoulders, small butt, ridge backed and tusked. Since then I have seen more and more with her body style, I hope this is not a trend for our area. Domestics or Feral's will run @ 1st sign of danger. Russians will turn and charge on you!

Note to self: always carry a loaded gun in hand, Leave truck door open just in case....

glad you're alright lee, and that's a good looking pig! welcome to the BOC man, there's tons of great info and as many great folks here. i have seen what you said about the temperament. we walked right by one in a mudhole a few years back that didn't move. it's like they're bada$$es and they know it! a lot of the ones in my area look more like russians in body shape and color. have killed a few spotted ones too though. my favorite thing to hunt is hogs!

Thanx Jordan, I stumbled upon this site by accident and from what I've seen so far, Think I'll hang out for a while ;)

I reset my trap 2 Days ago after I started seeing the 1st hog signs in almost 2 months. When I checked it yesterday afternoon I had a little doe standing in my trap with this really dumb look on her face. I thought "Oh great, another deer" but she hadn't tripped the door yet and darted off. Luckily. Back in January I caught a button buck, he was laying down in the middle calmly and when the door squeeked to open it he jumped, hit the back of the trap and broke his back :/ I drug him out and he layed there about 20 mins hoping that he just pulled a muscle, no such luck. Temptation is a killer thinking " I could cut his throat and hang him in the oak, 30 mins and the evidence will be gone" but that dang guilty conscience got the best of me and I called the game warden out. Something about that whole $10K fine, 6 months in jail, losing my hunting license up to 10 yrs, guns, vehicle and job that tends to make you want to do the right thing! The warden shot him & I helped load him up. I asked the warden "Whatcha gonna do with him now?" he said they get it processed and take it to the Hunters for the Hungry program, I told him "I'm a hungry hunter" but he didn't find the humor in it.

I sold a trap to a guy & he told me to run a single strand of barbed wire across the door to keep the deer out, I found that a small piece of old military camouflage works just as good. Getting too hot now to trap anymore, They tend to die from trap shock & heat. I put the GameCam back out last night, Time to check again what is coming around :-) Here are a couple of my previous cam picks from the trail leading to the trap. I spread out 1/2 bale of hay and mixed my feed in it so they would have to root around for a while in front of the camera. Enjoy!

Lee, I've always thought I would like to hunt them in the off season.Any ideas of where I could ask to find where they're a bother? There are some close to my deer camp but it's a 3 hour drive. Traping sounds kind of risky!! I have a 270 and a 22. Are they hard to put down? ---Rod---

My .270 is a universal favorite, I use it for deer/hogs/coyotes/bobcats. If I'm out specifically for hogs I prefer my 35 Rem.

I wanted a good lever action gun & was looking for a Marlin 30-30, I was at the pawn shop one day and saw a "35 Rem" on sale, I asked the clerk for a box of shells for comparison, the 35 Rem is basically a 35-35, larger bullet (200gr standard) more of a Whop. It had a 4x12x50 scope on it and a nice leather sling. I was curious why somebody would put a 500yd scope on a 150 yd gun but my Savage 270 from WalMart came with a 3x9x39, a 200 yd scope on a 500yd gun. So I bought it and swapped scopes & added weaver high rise mounts so I could still use the iron sights :-) The drawback is it's like throwing a brick! about 150 yds is the longest shot your gonna get accurately.

I shot this hog on a dead run @ 40yds with the 35 Rem, My buddy and I spooked them in a dry creek bed and when they came out the other side they were all running away except this 90lb boar, he decided to make a left turn. I caught him low in the neck, he did a head-stand followed by a cart-wheel & game was over :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/sh ank/d016cf71.jpg

My buddy was shooting a 243, he got a good lung shot on his sow after she got about 75yds away and we still had to track her for 100 more yds before putting a 357 round in the head http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/sh ank/5e996b7f.jpg.

Rod, the 22, let the kid carry it for squirrels, All it will do is make the hog MAD! I was checking traps about 2 yrs ago with my grandfather when we caught a ~150lb boar, I was going to clean him out so I popped him in the head from about 5' with my 38Spl using 125gr hydroshocks. We drug him out of the trap while he was still kicking and trying to load him in the truck to keep as much blood off the ground as we could he started really kicking, I figured it was just the final twitches until he tried to stand up again! I put my knee on his neck, stuck the barrel in his ear and fired off the last 4 rounds! When I cleaned him I cut the scalp to see what happened. The 1st bullet mushroomed on the skull and left 2 cracks goin in either direction! the other 4 I couldn't track because they splintered and shattered the bones.

I always carry my trusty S&W 357 now with 158gr semi-jacket bunt nose bullets, Like Amex says "Don't leave home without it!"

Gimme a holler Jordan, I usually run a few lines in the Colorado Easter Weekend (Family Reunion) and Mother Day (Family Time), by the time Father's Day comes around the water is usually too hot, can't keep the perch alive and the Gar become really active! Working on buying a pop-up camper right now :-) has A/C!
