I realize many of uall think I'm just some old longwinded frootloop and u may be right. Course u got to remember that I might not think to highly of some of you ung ones neither and I may also be right! The main problem I see with many of today's hunters is a lack of fetching up "SKILL" might be a more acceptable term in your mind and you can take ur pick cause it's all the same thing. The way I see it this is a result of several contributing factors but, they all break down to two main problems. #1. Today's hunters just ain't too dang bright and #2 WE seniors of the FRATERNIAL ORDER OF HUNTERS have done a plum lousey job of passing on our knowledge and skills to u ung ones!
As an Old Geezer that has been hunting deer longer than many of u have lived, it truely pains me to admit that I must include myself as one who has failed to educated (FETCH UP) u ung un's properly! Now I don't want uall to dispair non cause far as I can see (based on the young outdoorsmen/ladies I have seen in action) Ur off to a perty good start! Most of u have a decent grasp of the basics which is goodI feel far to many of us need too do a better job of practicing safty, SAFETY IN THE OUTDOORS CAN NEVER BE OVER EMPHASIZED! The problem with far to many folks today is Most folks think ifn u ain't got something u can just go out and buy it! Uall know I truly enjoy bursting folks bubbles so it gives me great pleasure to say,"WRONG THINKING TURKEY!" Ain't no one able to buy common sense nor SKILL but... there's a massive surplus of fools trying to sell it!
Most of the garbage folks tell outdoors folks, "YOU GOT TO HAVE" is bout as useless as teats on a boar hog! The equipment a hunter needs is really quite simple and basic. Naturally u neet a rifle, bow etc. along with ammo. You need clothing and boots appropriate for the season and area you intend to hunt. A hunting license, a good knife, a compass (know how to use it)matches, lunch, water,a length of rope (to drag your deer with)a hat and above all else NEVER, EVER, FORGET POH POH PAPER! SKILL, LUCK and A BRAIN (know how to use it also) ANYTHING ELSE IS EXTRA WEIGHT AND USELESS!
Anyone trys telling you, U got to have CAMMO, ANTLERS TO CLANK TOGETHER,CALLS, SCENTS, SCENT MASK'S, TREE STANDS, CLIMBING STANDS, 4 WHEELERS,
AND 3 LACKIES TO CARRY IT, IS PLUM FULL OF CONDENSED OWL FECAL MATTER! Some of that junk may be nice but it sure as hell ain't a neccessity!
Seriously,THINK ABOUT IT, Ol Danial Boone never used any of that junk and he sure nuff was a successful hunter! HE NEVER HUNTED ON ONE OF THEM GAME FARMS EITHER! Sure there are a whole lot more hunters today than 100 years ago SO WHAT? There is also a hell of a lot more game today than 100 years ago too! DO YOURSELF A BIG FAVOR, IMPROVE YOUR SKILL and OUTDOOR KNOWLEDGE AND SAVE YOURSELF ENOUGH MONEY TO GO ON THAT DREAM HUNT YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED!!! Later......Poppie

The only failure is in never having Tried!

You just reminded me why I quit hunting with my grandad, by the time he quit running his mouth I was dragging my deer out of the woods!

Donnie, Now that was funny!! (and probably true) Poppie, I think you just answered your own problem!! NOBODY wants to hunt, fish, or even listen to someone who knows EVERYTHING and has ZERO respect for what somone else (even if he/she is younger than dirt!!!) Might know and be able to teach an old fart!

Help somebody if you can!

What's a darn shame is that instead of listening to people, who might know something, REGARDLESS OF AGE!!! The "ol' timers" judge people's intelligence by their age! I'll be the first to agree that ALOT of the younger people today are dumbasses, BUT just like ALOT of "ol' timers" know everything and been everywhere and can NEVER learn anything from "some young punk kid" NOT ALWAYS TRUE WITH EVERYONE!!!

Help somebody if you can!

Bill, I am with you there brother. You cant tell my Daddy, Uncles, or my Pappaw anything when it comes to hunting and fishing. LOL! I can skunk them catfishing using cut shad, or skipjack, and they wont ever say, " boy, you did good, show me how to use that. ". Instead, they will say, " Well, back when your Daddy was a boy, we would catch em all day on catalpa worms, or nightcrawlers. We didnt have a use for anything else. ". HAHA! I love them to death, but, I wonder if they ever notice anything I've done in the woods, or on the water. Who knows!

Well I for one am a firm believer in listening to the old timers that have the experience and that is worth allot if you asked me. Now I didn't say you couldn't improve on what they have told you. We would still be walking around without shoes if the next generation didn't improve on what was taught before them.

Times with bait and NO money are better then times with money and NO Bait

You know fellas, ladies too! what IS so great is that we can all listen to the experience from others, then we can go do it OUR way! sometimes we do good and sometimes we wished we paid more attention. The most importiant thing is that we do it the way We choose, We enjoy it and create memories and tales to pass on to who ever will listen.
Shucks, some of the ol timers can outdo us all, an some jus think they can.
what tha heck, if ya ain't a legend in yur own mind, youll probly not be one in anyones! thats half tha fun of it.
and lets remember those that put theirselves on the line so we can to do it our way!!

Danny, I think you might be the only one who understand where I was comming from with my post. I wasn't knocking the ol' timers. Like you said I could skunk my granddaddy and my uncle and all they would say is that I was lucky. NOT hey, where did you learn how to throw a cast net, or what is a skip jack? LOL like you said I love them to death too and I think that if you would ask them. They would probably say that they tried to teach me how to hunt and fish and I wouldn't listen! I got an uncle who still doesn't think I joined the Army!! He says that it is because "Yeah, it's todays army though" or "You only did good cuz it is Clinton's army" NOT EVER! "Hey, I'm proud of you" or "Man, you graduated top 10 of your air assault class?"

Help somebody if you can!

Yeah Bill, I am proud of everything they taught me on woodsmanship, and fishing. But, even if they wont admit it, I do know alot of things that they have never experienced. I know I'm not better than them, but, I also know that I'm not beneath them now. We're even. I'm real glad that my Uncle, who served in Vietnam, doesnt say that to me. He is very proud of what I have done, and what I'm trying to do now.(Drill Sergeant). My Daddy, and Pappaw are also proud of the service to my Country. That was the first time that they ever said, " good job boy, we're durn proud of you. ". That meant the world to me. I am not knocking any advice that any of them ever gave me. It all helped me in some form or fashion, at one time or another. I would just like to get a little credit once in awhile. I have made myself and my Wife a vow, never to do the same to my Son. I dont want him to ever think that his Daddy didnt think he was as good a hunter, or fisherman as he had been. I think he'll appreiciate it later on.
