Lil cat 88, cut the bottom out of a jar of peanut butter, take a string and hang the jar about three feet off the ground. If you hang it too close to the ground, squirrels, turkeys and coyotes will eat it. I don't know if it is legal to use if you are hunting as they may consider it to be hunting over baited area. I have done it out of season just to see the deer. I don't hunt, I just like to see the things in nature. The peanut butter will not last long as they will eat it until it is gone. You won't catch em sittin' at home. Chattanooga, Tennessee BOC DONATION SUPPORT MEMBER

One of my young Marines told me this: Take the lid off of the jar and screw it into the side of a tree a couple feet off the ground. Then screw the jar into the lid and cut the bottom off. I haven't tried it, I can buy 100lbs of corn for less than two jars of peanut butter. "For those who have fought for it, freedom has a special flavour the protected will never know." Maple Hill, NC

ROB INSTEAD OF SMEARING PEANUT BUTTER OVER YOUR BODY TRY THE PEPPERMINT CANDY IN YOUR POCKETS MUCH LESS MESSY HAHAHEHEHEHE. I HAVE THOUGHT FOR A LONG TIME THE PEPPERMINT SMELL COVERS THE HUMAN SCENT. |

Rob, I'm starting to think like you these days. I use some racoon scent in film canisters and some earth wafers, but that's about it now. I have all the attractants, but can't say I've ever absolutely seen them work. Bout the only other thing I do is put out some straight doe pee(not in estrous) for a confidence builder(theory is if a deer is right on the verge of walkin into your area, they'll think there is already deer there). Can't say that it works, but I've had does walk within a couple of feet of it and not react at all. And they were downwind of them too. Your philosophy is a good one I think. I'm starting to think they're a waste of money sometimes. Got three deer this year, so I guess it's not hurting either. I just can't say it's actually helping either. Some of the fellers in Mississippi use to hold their clothes over a heavy smoking fire to get the smoke sent in them. They said it works but I don't know. You won't catch em sittin' at home. Chattanooga, Tennessee BOC DONATION SUPPORT MEMBER

Some people here also go to where they're gonna hunt and pick up a trash bag full of dirt and leaves, etc. from the area they will be hunting. They then put it in trash bags with their hunting clothes in it and let it sit til they go hunting. Guess it's supposed to make them smell like the area they are hunting. Don't know if it works though, never tried that. I do however go cut a small cedar tree and chunk it up and put it in with my hunting clothes while storing them for the year. If nothing else, they sure do smell good when you get them out for the first time of the year. Bryan Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee BOC DONATION SUPPORT MEMBER

by the time deer camps are set up for a week before season, the smoke smell is everywhere and so is the human smell in most areas, standin by the fire in the smoke of early mornin or late night decents ya plenty,i know folks that have built a fire on their stand, went ta sleep and were woke up by a buck standing over them snorting, doe in heat is good if ya place it on fresh scrapes, will make the buck that made the scrape a lil more careless and will cause him ta stay closer to the scrape ya scented , i have done that and it works JPB Harriet,Arkansas Tight lines and bent poles my bretheren B.O.C take a youngun fishin, they are the future. Dangit, there I go again changing the topic. The issue here is attractancts, not cover scents. It was good to here your opinions though. I've had Bull elk within 8 yards, downwind, looking straight at me without cover scents. Could have been luck I guess. I have found the best scent is not scent. I see very few deer using the commercial cover scents. If I clean up good, pack my clothes in pine needles, and hunt downwind (most important), I see more deer. I think the commercial scents are designed to hunt DOLLARS, not deer. As far as attractants, where legal nothing works better than good old fashioned shelled corn. Something about the yellow brick road deer can't resist. No offence there egg...But they taste sooo good. For the price of a box of shells, and all the meat I can get with the shells in that box, it's well worth it in my opinion. We, my entire family, have never been well off and the game we take has made a difference. Substancially. As for scent I really don't know to say for sure. But...I do civil war reinacting and such and wear my confederate uniform as hunting clothes. Feel kinda sneeky in em I guess. LOL. But my uniform, it doesn't stink mind you, has never in more than ten years seen a washing machine. For one it's hand sown wool and would come apart. The only cleaning it gets is when it rains or I jump in a lake or stream. I have, on numberous occasion, got within bout 3yds of deer and they don't know I'm there till I screw up and make noise. LOL. My dream has been to take a deer with a knife for years. To me that would be the defigning point in my life as a hunter. May not seem all that good an idea to most yall but I've been closer than most ever could. Got gouged once too. LOL LOL. Not impaled mind you, just a scrape that bled for awhile. Deer got kicked in the chops perty hard in the process too. I will get one eventually. May have scars to prove it but I will get one. Keep your hunting clothes in the garage or shed and don't wash em. If ya need to wash some blood or swet off em dip em in a lake pond or stream. Don't even use a hose on em. Then when you go hunting take a long shower with no soap and wear that outfit. It'll make a difference I assure you. I have never in my life used scent for deer hunting and have no problem getting close. I normally use blk powder and have never not got my deer. Except with a knife. LOL. Just my opinion... DAN... YOUR WHAT HURTS??? Davenport, IA. (Quad cities) Its not a fire unless ya can see it from space.

I like to hunt gas pipelines or power line easements for the long range opportunities they present. As a means of tempting a buck to linger just a tad longer, during the rut, I put out a tampax that has been soaked in a well known commercial estrus doe product. They do work in my opinion. Have seen some bucks just sniff them and move on. Others have lashed them off the bush then laid down on them and rolled like a dog on a roadkill. Had one nice buck pick one up and carry it off with him. What I feel really works for me in terms of not being detected by deer is 300-400 yards of separation. |

I have experimented with PB and other items in my backyard. Deer come to a stump about 30yds from my back porch all night long even with 2 big flood lamps shining on it. I have watched alot and from what I have seen they don't eat it much if any at all. The coons and possums absolutely love it however. When given a choice between PB and something else the deer have always ate the something else. Like corn, apples, pears for example. When there was only PB they either didn't eat at all or licked it once and left. I also found that no more deer came through the yard with PB out than did with none. I have used about 6 commercial sized cans this past fall trying it out and all I can say is my coons and possums are getting huge! VIRGINIA IS FOR CATFISH LOVERS Danville,Virginia

I buy a pack of crackers, a jar of peanut butter, and a sack of corn. I put the P/B on the crackers and throw the corn all over the ground. I eat the P/B and crackers and wait for the deer to come up and eat the corn. It works for me. As far as cover scents go I think it's a money thing.
