hey everyone i need some help. i have been hunting a place for the past 5 or so years and have encountered several big racked bucks but never got a shot off they eluded me somehow and never presented a shot. 2 years ago i jumped a huge 10 pointer and he disapperaed. i hunted every day after that but never saw him again. last year in the same place i walked within 15 yards of an even bigger 12 pointer the thing was it was pich black dark and my light caught him. both years he was rubbing 1 to 2 feet high on small sapplings and i meen rubbing them. last year he wore 20 willows out less than 25 yards apart. this year he is rubbing 4 to 5 feet up and has torn the bark smooth off of some of the trees. most of the trees are on the edges of the field i'm hunting and was wondering if any of you have ever seen this kind of activity before. most might think of fourwheelers or tractors but some places he is been rubbing is only reachable by your 2 feet. the thing is i have hunted scrape lines before 1 to 5 trees but this buck has anywhere from 20 to 50 trees rubbed in a 30 yard span. has anyone ever heard of this. the next time i go ill take the old camera and take pic's it's unbelievable. one plus i have going for me is that the hunting pressure is low. the only thing is we have a bunch of headlighters on our property but somehow he has survived 3 years of it so i guess he nows what he is doing |

Tom, try sneakin in there real early and climb a tree somewhere with good shooting lanes and sit it out during the middle of the day. Some big bucks move most in the middle of the day, especially if you're in and out at about the same time each day you're there. Make sure you're not using the same tree/blind everytime either. Old bucks seem to get a sixth sense about that. I don't normally hunt big bucks on purpose, but I've had a couple that were hard to outsmart like that. Just pay close attention to winds and do something different each day, such as location, scents if you use them, etc. Try to make it so the deer can't pattern you. I have a friend that was hunting a big deer I had found and hunted for 2 years. I told him about the deer and what I had seen. He went in for the first time in that area and found a nice deep depression in the ground. He layed down and covered himself with an army poncho liner and sure enough, the deer passed by within 10 yards of him. It was a nice 11 point buck. Just something to try. when the pepermint candy canes get to the stores buy several bags. hang several all around your tree stand. suck on peppermint while in your stand. never saw a big buck yet who can resist peppermint. it is much better than apples. i only take pictures now but in just a few weeks i can have big bucks walking within 10 feet of me knowing i am there. even had a 10 pointer take peppermint out of my hand. please never shoot one you do not intend to eat. |

I never heard of the peppermint thing but it is worth a try. I did make a buddy of mine mad last year. we went out together and we saw a heard of deer and I shot one, well the heard ran about 20 yards and stopped. Now they are closer and an even clearer shot. I took aim and started to drop another one.(In Georgia you can kill 12 deer 2 bucks and 10 doe)Anyhow, I had pressure on the trigger and then relaxed. I shrugged my shoulders and told him "we got meat now no sense in killing another one" He was mad just because I didn't kill another one! I agree with Frank, don't shoot it if your not gonna eat it. Help somebody if you can!

Tom what you have described sound like he is showing his dominance. I found a bucks scrape line in 1997. The scrapes were about 12-16” in diam. I knew he was a good one. I could tell by the track. He rubbed a tree every now and then. Small ones mostly. So I got the bright idea of putting some dominate buck lure in one of his scraps. Two day later he had doubled the size of his scrape and hooked 20 bushes. I was working with a scrape line of 5 scrapes. I lured him again plus two more scrapes with the same lure and two days later the scrapes grew to 3’ diam and 50 bushed and now trees whipped up. I lured him again and two days later I killed him. 13pt net score 134”. Now while luring him I always wore hip boots, rubber gloves, and a long slicker. I didn’t touch anything in his area, I just put a Q-tip with the lure on it in the back of his scrape. I would stick it in the ground and push it in till the tip was at the ground. The morning I killed him he was standing in the dew trail where the lure had just been dragged to the stand. I shot him at 35 yards. He thought that another buck had moved in on him and he was looking to whip some butt that morning. I had done this before, but never on such a large and old buck. when the moon is right the fish will bite

MAN, Tony that is an awesome buck!! and it takes a true sportsman to out smart a big guy like that! (or some dumb luck) I have a buddy who killed a 14 pt in Kentucky and he dropped it LITERALLY right on top of a doe that he shot about 30 seconds earlier! He shot the doe and was looking through the scope to be sure she was down and he saw the brute walking out to her!TRUE STORY! And a huge buck! I got some pics I will post if someone will help me do it. Help somebody if you can!

Thanks Bill. I can tell you the reverse side to the story of the big buck your buddy killed. I have killed three good bucks I can think of off the top of my head that were chasing does and after I shot the buck, the doe would come back and try and make the buck get up and go again. The first time it happened I thought it was just a dumb young doe. The second time it happen I knew there was something to it. The third time it happened, I realized that the does like to be chased to the point that the buck is going to lose interest and then they stop. I thought of and other one, thats 4. Does like it as much as the buck. I killed one in his tracks and the doe came back and nugged him for over 20 mins. That was cool. I have also watched up to 5 bucks chase one doe. And they were all about 2 mins apart. That was real cool. I wish it would have been a doe day and I could have shot her just to see what the bucks would do. HEHE. when the moon is right the fish will bite

Yeah, in Kentucky you can only shoot a doe on the last 2 days of the 7 day season and you can only take 1 buck and 1 doe. I live in Georgia now and you can take 12 deer. 2 bucks and 10 doe and you can take either sex any day of the 4 month long season. Help somebody if you can!

Cool, in Louisiana you can take six deer per season by any means you use, six total. You can take six bucks or six does. You can shoot anything during bow season and muzzel loader season. You can only take a doe on doe days during the modern rifle season. You can kill a doe and a buck on a doe day. Other wise you can only kill one deer per day. when the moon is right the fish will bite
