Do they actually work?
If the do, are there some brands that are better than others or are they all the same?

Keep on

Yes I believe they work.
I use Hunter Specialty's brand fresh earth cover scent and have noticed a big difference in how close deer will get to me without winding me.
Give it a try.

i believe some of these products work to some extent to help eliminate human scent, however i don't think anything on the market today can totaly eliminate all human scent.i've had good sucess with scent sheild, some of the carbon lined garments are getting good reviews.good luck!!

The best and cheapest cover scent I've found is just get a bunch of leaves and dirt off the forest floor and rub it all over your huntin' outfit. I've had a bobcat come within 10ft of me when I was sitting under a tree and he never even glanced in my direction. As a bonus, all the debris adds some extra camo!
If it doesn't hit my bait like a train, then it ain't worth the effort to reel it in. I ain't got no time for nibblers.

...Lots of good stuff here. I too believe that forest humus, pine and cedar needles, ect.rubbed into my hunting clothes works well. I also agree that nothing can eliminate the human odor completely. Best remedy short of having the wind in your favor is to get WAY UP in the trees...I wear rubber boots going in.Killed a six ptr yesterday that walked up under my tree,to a tarsal scent i'd put down, while I sat 35 ft. up the tree. I've duplicated that perhaps a dozen times now...

the best scent cover i have found is a hog farm.
in the winter the colder smelly air hugs the ground , out of a little over 1600 acres our family owns i primarily hunt a 10 acre hardwood ridge down wind from the lagoons. i used to smoke and i have to say most of the deer i killed i had to lay a cigarette down to shoot them. dang cigarette burns in the carpet of all my lockons.
needless to say deer are alot less skittish aroun d active farming operations, they are used to seeing human activity. a highway splits our farm, i generally hunt the side of the road with the most farming activity for ease and simplicity with limited time to hunt. thats where we send the kids to hunt. the other side of the road , you better have your stuff together to hunt, its like night and day.

I know guys who spend a lot of money on cover scent and scent proof clothing, then stand around the campfire and get smoke all over them or even smoke cigarettes or dip Skoal on stand.

I am sure cover scents do help at certain times of year and especially when the deer have been spooked from hunting pressure.

During the rut, it wouldn't matter if you were wearing a clown suit and smelled like a street bum that hadn't had a bath in 3 months. I have seen bucks walk right along where I had walked to get to my stand while following a hot doe. I have had buck's completely ignore calls, whistles and movement before when they were trailing a hot doe. I have had a buck start scraping and hooking a bush that I had peed on.

Sometimes, I think deer cover scents are more designed to lure hunters than they are to help hide them. However, never under estimate the value of doe estrus scent.

I will put it like my father in law put it to me. All the scent stuff is great for the first day of the season after that you could take a dump in your pants and if you play the wind right you will kill a deer. You can buy all the scent killer stuff and not play the wind right and never see a deer....I do use the cheapest stuff i can find its all about confidence for me but i don't think it really matters.

Times with bait and NO money are better then times with money and NO Bait
