Paul, the darn things have been declared a nuisance here in Oklahoma. They have been a problem for years, but the Department of Wildlife, in one of their occasional moments of wisdom, have finally given the green light to hunters. If you see one on public hunting areas and you have a general hunting license, then it is open season. Maybe I'll get another shot when bow season opens for deer.
You think I'm paranoid?
Gee, sorry but WE don't feel that way.

Never been hog hunting, however, I have met a fella who showed me a very mangled looking leg on him from one.
The first time he had trouble, he shot one with a bow but it kept coming. He got in the tree OK and proceeded to fill him with arrows. Did no good for a couple of hours till it bleed out.
He learned his lesson about carrying a side arm, however, a couple of years later,
he shot another one with a bow but it kept coming, he got upa tree but the branch broke! He killed the dang thing with his side arm but not before he lost alot of flesh and blood!
Dang things sound more dangerous than bears!

kccats in hot pursuit!

I'm jealous. I have always wanted to try that. I lived in Texas, and now Missouri, and I hunt a lot - but I have never seen one. They must all be south of St. Louis.

Just finished a 9 day hunt 10 m s of Brackettville, TX and 25 m n of Mexican border. Hogs came in only at night. on 4th day set some snares and caught 3 hogs, 150# 225# and a broken 600# test cable (no livestock on the place). My partner arrowed a nice 9pt/160# buck tho.

I have info on a public bowhunt at the Aransas NWR at Austwell, TX. $50 for nine days hunting. No guns/no feeding allowed for any reason. Many mosquitoes, snakes and hogs. Very hot/humid. 58,000 acres. Mostly a young mans proposition if you're prone to get any distance from dirt road.

There is a couple good old boys in Ocala Florida that hunt hogs with dogs and a knife. I think worse than catching cats by hand. lol

I went on my 1st hoghunt Dec 25 in Faxon,Ok. My boss had been on a hunt here and dared several of us to do it. Since the hunting season was about over, 3 of us guides and the boss headed to Ok for our hunt(his treat to us). It was an awesone experience. The outfitter uses mountain curs on the hood of the truck to sniff out the hogs and when they get the scent, they are off and running. Tracking collars kept us clued to the direction of the dogs. When the dogs had the hog at bay, off we went with 2 pitbulls trained for hog catching. when within 50-100 yards of the hog we released the pits and run with them to get to the hog. The guides will grab the hog by the backside, while the dogs have the hog by the ears or whaever they can grab ahold of. Quick as you can you slip your knife (bout a 12 inch blade) behind the shoulder and work the blade up and down to cut the heart. Believe me, you know when you have accomplished this. LOL I ended up taking home a 300 lb boar and a 200 lb boar. Between the 4 of us we had 6 hogs. My ride and I left on the 3rd evening as the guys were headed out for their third night. They ended up getting on a 600+ lbr, which ended up killing one of the pits and laying one cur in a brushpile. They never did get that one. So my 300lbr was the biggest we took on that trip. Can hardly wait till we go back next yr.
300 lbr
Life is grand and by the grace of God, I take it one day at a time.

Dave, that sounds exciting. I used to hunt them with dogs in central Fl. The vegetaion there makes for some hard hunting, on man and dogs. Oh did I mention the biggest derned diamond back rattlesnakes in the country kept us company too?

Also built some traps that worked very well. Used them when we needed a hog for a party and didn't have time to hunt them.

SO YALL HUNT THE HOGS TOO? WE GET INTO THEM ANYTIME THE OPPORTUNITY ARISES. HERE IN THE TEXAS PANHANDLE, THE PIGS KEEP THRASHING THE PEANUTS, COTTON, AND ALFALFA YEAR ROUND, AND MULTIPLY LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE! JUST SOUTH OF AMARILLO, WE HAVE THE SECOND LARGEST CANYON IN NORTH AMERICA (PALO DURO) AND THE HOGS REALLY USE IT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. THE LAST ONE I KILLED WAS WITH MY RUGER GP-100 .357 MAGNUM AT 50 FEET. ONE TO THE SPINE, ONE TO THE SHOULDER, DOWN FOR THE COUNT!
JUST BOUGHT A RUGER SUPER BLACKHAWK HUNTER IN .44 MAG- HOPEFULLY CAN TRY IT OUT IN MARCH! AFTER WE CATCH ENOUGH RATTLESNAKES FOR THE LOMETA ROUNDUP....
GOOD HUNTING AND FISHING, ALL... GREAT SITE!
JORDAN
OH, I HUNT THEM IN THE DAY WITH A .30-06 AND AT NIGHT WITH AN SKS ASSAULT RIFLE- 165 GRAIN AND 125 GRAIN BULLETS, RESPECTIVELY.

Thanks very much Jason. I'll keep that email handy.

My son may be moving back to Cocoa in the near future, and I'll be down there more often then.

I did spend more than 25 yrs in the Cocoa, Titusville area fishing and hunting, but those large channel cats you mentioned in your other posts are interesting, and I do love to hog hunt. The dogs are awesome on a hunt.

Did you ever get to trap them on the space center? They have some monster hogs out there, and when they start to get overpopulated or nusances, they get trapped out. From what I knew then only one man was allowed to trap out there. that was several yrs ago.
