You're allowed three bucks in some counties in Texas. I took all three of mine with a .22 Hornet (Ruger 77-22 model). Didn't mean to do it that way since I normally use a 25-06 or 243 but was using the 22Hornet as a spotter gun while different grandchildren were supposed to do the actual kill shot. Anyway, for a multitude of reasons (couldn't find it in the scope, I changed my mind, scope cap left on, safety left on, etc) the shots were not taken by the kids. As the deer started walking away I shot them in the neck with the 22H. Well, two of them in the neck (an eight and a ten) and the other through the ribs (4pt). On the rib shot deer the bullet did not make it all the way through. It was puckered up just under the skin on the exit side. The neck shot bucks dropped like rocks. I was very impressed with that little 45 gr hollowpoint. I have recently decided, based on those performances, to purchase a HOWA model 1500 22-250 in a thumbhole stock configuration. I intend to hunt from a 20' tower blind where I should have some shots out to 500yds available. Unfortunately will have to await next season to put it to practice. |

My favorite deer rifle depends on where I'm hunting. I live and hunt in the river bluff country in north east Kansas. If I am working the bluffs or up into the hills I will be carring my 1952 made Savage Model 99 250-3000. I mounted an old Redfield Lo-Pro scope on it. I have taken alot of deer with that old rifle. When I hunt the crop fields in the evening I am packing my A-Bolt in .270. I took two deer last season from the corn stubble at a measured 405 yards with "ole meat in the pot". Don't get me started on gun talk, I won't be able to stop. |

I don't think I have participated in this discussion so I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. I have a love affair with the old traditional cartridges. My favorite is the 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser. I own four rifles chambered in that caliber. Two are full military. One is a sporterized M38 Swedish Mauser and one is a custom rifle I built on a Mauser action. This is without a doubt the best deer rifle I have ever used, and I've used a lot. My second favorite is the old 7MM Mauser. I own two rifles chambered for that cartridge. My wife shoots one that I built for her and the other is my "for fun" rifle. I also have a .308, .243, a .50 muzzle loader and I'm building a .280 on a Mauser action. I'm building the .280 for my Elk rifle. Whitetails and Muleys will be taken with my 6.5X55. Never forget your dreams. Work and play hard to make your dreams a reality.

I own a Savage bolt action in 270. It has killed every deer me, or the Wife has shot at. I think we're up to 10. Also have owned a 243, two 30-06's, two 30-30's, and a 308. I love the 270, but like someone said earlier in the thread, I love the '06 for its versatility. If I ever make it out to hunt with my Daddy in Colorado, I plan on buying a 338. Lotsa elk out there you know. If you aint covered in slime, you aint fishin hard enough!

I shoot a Weatherby Mark V 7MM Magnum in the Rem load with 165 gr. Federal Premium Nossler Petitions. With 50 milimeter optics the rifle is deadly out to 500 yards. Love the gun and the recoil is not as bad as you would think. Does sound like a cannon though. LOL Ba$$es? We don't need no stinkin Ba$$es!

No Danny I have .308win for that. Rem 700BDL-V with Leopold 6x20x40ADJ/AO with a Harris Bipod and 16oz trigger pull. I use Rem brass with 168 sierra HPBT Match with H414 and CCI LR primers. I have such a deep lands set on the rifle till I seat the bullet out so long that I can only put one in the clip and one in barrel. When you see it out, there is business to take care of. I can still hold a .500moa at 100. I have not shoot a any longer distants in a long time. when the moon is right the fish will bite

my .270 get's the job done. that's what counts, hehe. i've always been partial to my .30-30 too, being that it was my first rifle. i tend to let the terrain that i'll be hunting be the deciding factor on which gun will be my favorite for that particular day.
