My grandpa's traps were coffee cans. He would put hooks all the way around the can. I don't remember how he got them to stay there, but they were positioned around the circumference of the can with the points set so that you could put your hand in the can, but when trying to get it out, you would get hooked. He would then tie the can off to a log using rope, then he would put a chunk of pork in the can, and toss it in the water. I remember that his traps fed us many many many times. Anyone ever heard of Turtle Mulligan. For parties around the deer/duck camps, we would make a pot of it so big that we would have to stir it with a boat paddle with holes drilled in it. Everyone would eat, and take some home with them. That stuff was still good even after the 5th day in a row of eating it. I wish I had some right now. |

Hey threedukum we still have a turtle mulligan every year. My wifes home town has a big pot of it every year. It is like their homecoming. My family has one also. We have a big campout and make a big pot of mulligan stew. Nothing like it mmmmm good. tom, rat is right the hooks go around the out side of the board pointing in so when the turtle tries to leave he gets hooked. I had a old timer catch snapping turtles out of my pond for years. He would use a big hook and beef neck meat that the local slaughter house would trim from the neck after dressing a beef. It would still be bloody . It caught lots of turtles. He would tie the hook to a heavy line then to a fresh cut willow pole and push them in to the bank and ajust the line so that the hook and meat were just in the water. he would come back the next morning and gather the poles and turtles. Hope this helps. There are those who say it cant be done; Those who wonder how it might be done, And the few who just go and do it. Bearcat |

I talked to My Dad this am about turtle hunting, I saw a old man on T.V pulling a big one outta the side of a mud bank and told the ol man about it, And I told him if I had some one to take me out and show me how to do it again that I might try it. He said this summer he will take me out and show me if he is still alive (he has had about 10 heart attacks) , I remember when I was a young boy me and My brother would go turtle hunting with the ol man and he tried to teach us then, But We were'nt brave enough. I am hoping to get my nerve up for the big hunt, I talked with CatJoe this am and told him about it and he wants to go with us, What do you think Whistler are you up for it....Tom |

Well Greg, one way to catch them is the shallow creek method. walk the bank or wade...see em , grab em. this works well but one must lack a certain amount of fear....usally a direct result of a brain contusion,.. in my case. Now i perfer to catch them on hook & line. Traps can be fashioned but i just like to reel em in.....Besides,...you still gotta get the ornary critters out of the trap......have fun....watch the fingers...the neck is longer then you think....and lighning fast....NO BULL...be careful if its your first time.... |

Hey Barry, Your points about the neck being lightning fast and longer than you think are no BS, as you stated. While I grew up catching and harvesting snapping turtles, it wasn't until I had the chance to take care of one (about 25#s) in an aquarium that I really came to appreciate how fast they were. I'd throw in some huge tadpoles, and that turtle would wait until one got in the corner, and then strike with a bite that could sever a finger with the speed of a ninja.

Yeah Jim, They may lack in ground speed but they definitly are quick in the neck. Heres a true and funny story. Once , a buddy and i and our dates were ridin' a back road when we seen an old snapper crossin' the road.Well, i knew ol' tilly down at the bar would trade a 12 pack of your choice for a good snapper....(it'd be on the bar menu that night..turtle soup)...so I tail grabbed it and threw it in the trunk......but ten minutes down the road...my girl screams and theres ol' snappers head stickin' out of the speaker hole....from the back seat. Well we smacked him a time or two with a beer bottle and he went back in the trunk....made the trade...and later had a bowl of mighty fine soup.....tho it cost me a $1.25 |

Alright boys I have a little challenge. I have a pond where I find with a huge turtle in it. The head on this thing is about as big as my two fists put together. The pond has a lot of moss close to the bottom and is only about 4 ft deep. This leaves about 2 ft of fishable water. I have tried to use a bobber with a perch under it but have had no luck. What should I do? and no i am not going wading in after him.haha |
