What kind of cats are in Badin? What's the biggest fish caught there that any one knows of?
Most importantly where would I take a really big fish to weigh in?

Thomas what you need to do is buy a saltwater scale that goes over 100lbs. I have one that's very accurate and it goes up to 105lbs. It was about 85.00 but well worth it. As for certified scales you'd have to go to HWY 49 Sporting Goods, I think they have a scale.

Hay Mark. Badin was constructed in 1917 by the construction Company of America (ALCOA) on the Yadkin River. The reservoir covers an area of 5,350 acres, has 115 miles of shoreline, a maximum depth of 190 feet. Water fluctuations are minor.

A large part of Badini Lake's shoreline adjoins the Uwharrie National Forest which received its name from part of the oldest mountain range in NOrth America, the Uwharrie Mountains. In 1961, Presiident John F. Kennedy designated 43,000 acres of Montgomery, Randolph and Davidson Counties as a National Forest.

I intend to start fishing Badin this spring as well as Tuckertown. Will keep you posted.

Thanks Larry! Now, another question: How long have Blue catfish been in thr reservoir? Were they intenionally stocked, or introduced otherwise? I'm curious about the lake specifics because the state record Blue came form there. Thanks again for any info, and Tight Lines!

Sorry, I can't give ya specifics but you can always come and try your luck a Badin this Spring at the gathering. It's a beautiful Lake. Went for the first time last summer. Word of advice though. If you're takig a boat use the northern part o the lake. The southern section is known for speed boats, jet skiers, and water skiers.

There is a chance I will make the gathering Susan, but I won't know probably until the week of.

I'm not worried about boaters....I'll be fishing only at night when they're all sleepy heads in bed!

Hey Mark I started fishing Badin in 90 and didn't start seeing them until 93. Someone told me that they were catching them in the 80's though. I didn't start fishing for them until 94. I think the growth rate for blues on Badin is above average because of the large amount of baitfish in the lake. As for them being stocked don't know how they got in there. I haven't been able to get out latly, because of the weather. Just for your info most of the blues I catch on Badin come from the river section. I have caught them on the other side of the lake but there real hard to locate. Might be going out in the morning don't know yet, see-ya. If you have any more questions e-mail at my house Roberttomasek259@msn.com

Thanks Tomahawk. I hope to get that way sometime this year, hopefully the gathering. I was just real curious because of the record being caught out of Badin. That 83 lber has to be at least 25 years old, probably closer to 30. Thanks for the info, and hang one if ya head out tomorrow!

Hey Mark, is that a blue cat yer holdin in yer pic or a channel? I've seen a lot of channels but never a blue. (That I know of anyway) The side and dorsel fins don't look the same on the one your holdin as the one's I usually catch. That's why I'm askin.

Susan that's a 58 lb. Blue. Once they get above 8-10 lbs they can be hard to distinguish because the channels loose their juvenile tell-tale spots. The way you can distinguish between the adults is to count the rays on the anal fin. Blues have more than 28 (usually 30), channels 28 or less. Tight Lines!

I thought it was a blue, I just wanted to make sure. The way I could tell was the dorsal fin was different and it didn't have the long lower fin. Thanks.

Went to Badin on Sunday. Despite the high winds, cold, and large whitecap waves I still caught some fish. Largest was a 6 pound catfish, smallest was a little tiny perch. I also caught a PURPLE bluegill. Never saw one of those before. I found a cove that was sheltered from the extreme wind and waves and whilst relaxing there I spotted a flock of wild turkeys, a muskrat, several turtles, and a hawk or eagle type bird that caught a large bluegill.

I ended up bringing 4 catfish home to use as fertilizer on my tomato garden and when I got home I found that 3 of them were still alive despite being out of water for almost 2 hours. I have a goldfish pond out back that one of those blue herons found last fall and ate all 30 of my goldfish. So I put the catfish in there. 3 Ponds, each with a 3-5 pound catfish in it. I will have to go back to Badin this Sunday and try again. Still need fertilizer for my tomatoes.
