Bud most pepole try not to catch them...But I'm like you i try to catch em' lol. Anyway i use about a 3/0 hook and get a minnow about 3 inches long hook it trough the back/top of the tail. then if in an area with little or no current use a bobber/float. if current then small sinker. the record for ohio is 25lbs and 49" my uncle caught one last year that was about 25 lbs but didnt know the record till later that week lol. Most people dont think about eating gar either. but me and my uncle try it..... build a fire get a hot bed of coals then just lay the fish in it about 10 lb fish wait till the fish is BLACK in color then flip it. same on that side, when done the meat may look like its not done but it is. most meat is around the top of the back. TASTE LIKE CHICKEN!!!!!

I use a 5/0 Kahle with a live or cut bluegill most of the time. and like Matthew said let em run with it a ways, because those Gar will carry you're bait in their mouth alot of times before you hook em. I've had em at the bank and spit the bait right at me.

You can use about 8" of rope and bend it in half. Put a zip tie on the end closest to the bend to make a loop and tie your line to the loop. Fray the loose ends and cast out where you have alot of Gar hitting the top of the water. When they hit the rope their teeth get tangled in the rope and can't spit it out and there is no hook to set. They will put up a great fight and are alot of fun to catch. I thought I posted this last night but I must not have hit the post button. LOL

The best way I have found to catch a gar is to use a small treble hook, with a couple minner's on it. when I was a kid and we went catfishing if the area had a bunch of gar's my dad would catch one and tie a stick in its mouth and turn it loose, it would run all the gar's outta there.
