went fishin today around noon at baldwin power plant lake here in illinois.
we had crawlers shrimp minnows and wax worms.
heard crappies were hitting good there this weekend.
well aftr catching several tiny channels and
a couple yellow sunfish,
i hooked on to something that i tried to get to surface for about 40 minutes before my line snapped and i reeled in my hook still intact but the sinker was gone.
i had a barrel sinker tied on the end with a 7/0 circle about 18'' up the line.
i know what ever it was had to be huge the trouble i have now is after loseing this fish,
2 more in the boat got hard snags and when we started to pull up anchors to move to another location the anchors were like stuck under a train ,
i had to cut the lines!
i know what was on my line (fishing line),
had to be a fish yes maybe it was intwined in some snags but it was pulling line out of the reel.
at first i thought i had a monster cat but after the snagging of the anchors i dont know what to think i let my brotherinlaw and sons feel the fishin pole to see if they too thought it was a fish and each of them said they could feel it pulling . if i would let up on tension it would start to swim away and i'd have to work all over again to regain the line pulled out.
anyone ever had this happened to them?
i know it was a fish and not a snag it was awesome and then heartbreaking i know this lil rhino med action pole is a pretty stout one
and the rhino rbc 200 aint a wimp either .
i'm just confused about what that was .
wish i had a fish locater maybe that would have showed up?

a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work anytime!

There are three kinds of fish. Swiming fish and limb fish and rock fish. LOL. Sounds like you had big boy on your line. Don't know witch of the three fish you had. I've been there and done that. I'm thinking since your line broke on the sinker part and not the hook, you may of had a moving limb fish around you weight.
But I'm still not sold on circlu hooks. I haven't used them much. The time I did, the fish spit out the hook once I landed it and almost got away. A couple of times I lost the fish after almost geting it realed in. I still try to set the hook. Thats the problem. So you could have had a big fish with weight hung, line broke and fish spit out hook. Who knows. The big one always gets away. LOL

I have lost a few anchors over the year I pick up a Mighty Mite So far I’m not sorry I did. I have gotten it hung two times and gotten it back this last time it was hung so bad that I almost dipped the front of my boat when I was pulling it free. I have a 20ft alweld with 30inch sides and it an 119inchs from top of gun rail to gun rail it lacked just a few inches before water came over the front before it pulled free. The nice thing about it is with a few hit on the driveway it good as new. As you can see from the picture it fared the ordeal. The other thing is that I have only have had one time it didn’t hook up with no more then five to ten more feet of rope out than the water was deep. Well worth the money I spent on it.

heres a map of baldwin the large red x is where my ordeal was at.
at this size you cant read the words but the sky blue color is up to 10 feet
med.blue up to 20 feet
dark blue 30feet or more
this is a large rectangle lake made for the power plant as a cooling system .
its fed from the kaskaskia river

the bottom left is the dam
the top right is the warm water discharge.
hopefully next trip we will hit the discharge area.
this was our first trip and it was fun to say the least .

The same thing happened to us a few years ago fishing in the canal at Santee Cooper. Rod was in the holder, doubled over, my buddy Chris set the hook and nothing, it was like he was snagged?!?! He thought it was pulling but wasn't sure, gave the rod to our guide and he messed with it for a few....turned the drag way down and whatever it was, was pulling line OUT but as soon as he would try to reel in, nothing?!?! We never did get to see it or figure out what it was??? And the canal was NOT running enough to have trees and debris flowing through it like that....I think it was the Lockness Monster?!?! Actually, guess it coulda been a gator?!?!

Sounds like a fish on the line sinker in a snag. yep yep A good solution is to fish with the sinker on a seprate leader with lighter #line. I usualy use the carolina type rig. but after loosing a few good fish not just to snags, I,ve been thinking. Last year a fish took off with my hook and 9" chub the sinker stayed put the line ran through the sinker and the fish was yards away. I go to set the hook and the line starts cutting water out infront of me and what apeared to be about a 25# blue fliped the top of the water about 10 yrds down out popped the hook. Grr. I think from now on im gonna have to use the 3 way rig or putting on a stop for my sinkers. At least when goin for bigns. two cent
