Got my first one today. 05 catalog. Lot of good stuff in there. I'm still checking it out but I came across something that I might get and try this summer for catching bait. If ya have a 05 catalog its on page 18. Nylon Shad Trawl that you can attach to the side of your boat are it says pull about 35' behind the boat at 5 to 15 mph driving in a large circle. My Dad did something like this when I was a kid and I don't remember how it worked are excaly what he was useing. Has anyone ever used something like this and how did it work and how easy was it to get tore up. Thought I would ask. I ain't good at a throw net. LOL Also got the one man drop net for useing over the side of your boat. Anyone try one of those. Thinking about the flat spoon weights and the flat bank weights. Guess they be like the no roll. Also like the catfish mailbox on page 67. Alright, the wife is ready to run up to the lake. Be back later. LOL

Hey dano, i was thinking of buying the shad trawl also. I was also considering getting that one man drop net thing too. Looks like fun to me, sometimes i enjoy catching the bait almost as much as the kittys. It may be a couple weeks before i do buy them though kinda broke right now. Later

I bought one from Nylon Net a few years ago. It's maybe a 36" hoop with a fine net behind. It does not work as good as it says, if fact I could not get one fish in it because it pulls hard and slow. The fish will be in it but in pulling it to the boat, they escape because you can not pull it in that quick. The one your talking about might be better but Nylon Net's is not good.

Jason I hear ya about low on money. I too like catching bait. Love catching those bream. They sure can fight. LOL. Keep us posted on what yya get and how it works. Jim, I din't think about not being able to pull it in fast enough to keep the fish in it. That makes sense to me. I wonder if there is some way to put a draw string around the opening. Pull the sting to close the hole and then drag in to the boat. I don't know, its a thought. I hope to get me one and give it a try this summer.

Mine is just a hoop with 4 lines going to one to pull. I have had shiners boiling on the surface and could not get them in the boat. I might try a cast net next. Them silly wire traps, i have had no luck either. My money works at the bait wholesaler though. lol lol

Well I had already thought about the getting it back to the boat issue with the bait still in it. My thought would be having one person drive the boat and have another person pulling it in, keeping preasure on the bait to stay in. Doing this alone would be a bit tricky but possible if it works and its worth it im sure i could rig up one of my old anchor cranks for it or something close to my throttle to do it by myself. I hear ya dano, its easy to go down to the bait shop and get bait but i'm tired of paying 15 bux a weekend for bait. My wife kinda gets itchy about it too when she figures the checkbook. I believe ill go ahead and order one at the first of the month.

perhaps you could weave a second line behind the hoop with a slipknot.Keep that line slack.Drag the net, when full, retrieve the net using the second line, which will seal the net. ??

Jon, I was thinking the same thing. If it is that simple to fix the problem of pulling in without loosing the bait, I wonder why the manufacture didn't add the extra line to use as a drawl string. I think it would work.

used a shad trawl quite a bit in my younger days. pulled it behind a 14 ft jon with a 9.9. the biggest problem i had was catchin it on a stump. the one i had was perty tuff but i was afraid of ripping it. i tied a jug about 4 feet up the main line and just used a boat cleat for leverage holding on to the line with my hand. if i caught a stump just let go of the line and go back to the jug. my trawl was about 2 ft. wide at the mouth and 8 ft. long never had much problem with the shad getting out. but at half full couldnt hardly get it in the boat. worked best in shallow water, less than 5 ft deep. remember watch out for the stumps. GOT SHAD?

The deal to order one is just email them with your name and address, and with a request for one, and they will send it to you. I was kind of skeptical about it when they said they would on their page, but about a week later I got another catalog in the mail, titled for me. Catch-Photo-Release on all cats over 10 pounds. Take me down to the paradise city...

Check the regs where you live about using a trawl net. I can't use one here in Alabama.

Just joined this club, and was ready some of the messages. I bought a shad trawl from catfish connection, not real happy with it either. Yep! it pulls real hard. I think I go back to old faithful cast net. |
