This is a new one on me. Never heard of this weird critter before. The article that goes with the photo is below it. The Firewood Catfish aka Shovelnose Catfish is a large catfish that reaches sizes of up to five feet long; however the body is elongated and the fish don't weigh very much compared to their length. They actually look like they are starving. The firewood catfish has a flat head with very very long barbels. Which you can plainly see in the picture above and they are native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins. This specimen was actually caught by a fisherman in California. So obviously someone has released a store bought aquarium fish into the wild. This is illegal and various exotic can cause havoc with native species. no not good. the oscar and the plecostmous aka alge eater and armored catfish are 2 of the tropical species that are now common in florida and some other southern states from people releasing them. seriously folks is better to just kill them. it sounds bad but you doing more harm to the environment by releasing than ya would to kill them or give them to someone or a pet shop.
if it bleeds !!!!!cookit!!!!!! don't do today what you can put off untill next week. that clears time to fish!

you guys are right dont think i would want to eat one of those things(im not a big fan of fish bone soup), but they might make a really nice aquarium fish. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you give him a way to get out of the house for a lifetime.

That sure would be a story to catch something so crazy looking! I'd have to get lots of pics of that just because nobody would believe it. |

Why anyone would release a fish that cost that much is beyond me. I bought a 6in tiger shovelnose catfish about 12 years ago and the thing cost me 65.00. He grew to be 28in long and ate 50 goldfish a day, till one day I came home from work and he had gotten hung between the filter tube and the heater and (for lack of a better word)he drowned. But they are a beautiful fish. (Message edited by dreadnaught on February 20, 2005) Dreadnaught
If He ain't invited to dinner ,let him go back home!!! CPR I support the release of all cats over 10lbs

I agree with Jeremy on more harm than good. I say if you get a pet, fish , dog, bird etc. it's for life. You don't dump em on the side of the road are release them in the wild. Sometimes they have to be destroyed to keep from hurting the environment. How you think those big gators get in the sewers under N.Y. I saw the movie. LOL

Release any thing you dont want to eat is great. Please help conserve our enviroment for our kids tommorrow. I release pretty much anything I catch. Speaking that I am the only one in the house hold that east fish. But there is a bottom line I was tought at a young age. If the fish looks like it just wont make it or swallowed a hook too deep. Ill keep it for a fish fry with the friends. I try to keep the fish in the water to remove the hook and only keep the out of water the least possible amount of time. Steven |

thats the fish my screenname was derived from ive had 6 of them in the past 20 years . they are awesome looking in a tank and the mouth is almost invisable until it goes into feeding mode then the mouth stretches open like a snakes mouth then little fish better run and hide LOL ive always traded my fish that grow larger to a local pet store that is not in business anymore they would give me pretty decent cash or trade for credit . that fish does look scrawney but in the tank they look pretty cool thats funny that i just used that lure yesterday evening at least that guy caught a anerexic lookin fish!!!!!!!! <OOooooo< Darryl LOL
