Hey guys/girls I have heard a lot of people here talk about bank fishing. Just wandering if you have any tips for me. I am going to college and living right on the mississippi river, there is a lock and dam less than five minutes from here. I fish below it sometimes, but i was wondering how far from the dam should a person fish? anyway, if you could answer that or have any other tips for this type of area please let me know. thanks |

There should be a washout near the dam, by all means fish that if you can get to it. The hump following a washout should hold fish to either side of it also. It might be hard to tell from the bank exactly where these spots are, but if ya can really watch the water under a calm normal condition, you might be able to detect where the specific aresa are. Theres always the cast out a sinker and feel method too, although I must be a dummy, cause I haven't got that to tell me except maybe to educate me for some hangs.... If there's any structure near or around either side of the dam and locks, I try that too. Ya know catfish love structure. All in all, the best bankfishing I've ever done has come from good long casts and kinda knowing the river. Although I've managed some decent cats shallow too, I like the dropoffs and structure myself. I'd give a variety of baits a try and just keep casting to differnt areas until ya figure out some of the depths and hangs. Ya should find some fish there for sure, when one bait starts producing, that's the one ya need. Oh...if you're targeting Flatheads, I would stronly recommend LIVE gills or such, ya just can't beat em, and most any catfish will give it a try. If the eater size channels are what yer after, ya could try any one of the stinkbaits or FRESH cut bait, that should do the trick. Blues, they'll eat bout anything it just has to be there when they want it.... Hope some of this information helps ya out and GOOD LUCK.... the only other thing I might say is Spend as much time on the water as you can,,,,,that produces fish....only gurantee that there is. Thanks Jackie, I'll glady take that as a compliment. Hoping some of the info works for these younger fellers. Guys, check out many various threads concerning differnet areas of fishing from the bank, there is alot of useful information in them. Also check out the library. John, I'm not one of the fellers or guys, but I still appreciate the info. I do a lot of bank fishing, and always trying to learn new ideas for knowing how to find the cats, from shore. I've learned a lot in the past few years, but guess I've just been too dependent on Dad to get me around in the boat. That's next on my list of things to learn!!! Had planned on learning this summer, but we've kinda had a rough time around here, with everyone being in and out of the hospitals. Guess I'll just have to make it priority for this fall instead.

Hi all, I am new member and proud to be, Hope everyone is doing well and catching fish, I live in Sacramento CA. The past few months I have been trying to fish the sloughs that run off the rivers, If anyone knows about these I would appreciate any advice, I have had a few good days but mostly come up empty. I caught a nice 14 off a live minnow with a bobber while crappie fishing, the past few weeks I cant seem to get anything to bite, If anyone has any suggestions for bait I would appreciate it, I have tried minnows, crawdads. thanx and happy fishin |

Paul; Welcome to the board. Alot of good info and great people here. Try nightcrawlers, liver, Stink bait or larger chubs. and go to the California section and visit with them. They are in your area and would probably know what works there. Maybe try the bait shop for info as will. Later catfish156123 Keep Setting That Hook Currie Minnesota

Paul The best time to fish sloughs ,feeder creeks back waters etc is during rising water generally speaking the more water the better. As the water starts to rise above normal pool and the current gets stronger baitfish move to calmer water and the cats follow .Dont let the high water discourage you the more water the better.Hope this helps bro...Slimy Mattoon,Illinois

Charles,You are on the right track!Give those critters a choice.Cat fish have been caught on every thing from A>Z.A smart fisherman never limits his self to one bait. With thinking like that you are sure to go far!

That is the truth! My wife only likes to catch trout and perch. Here bait fits in a tackle box that fits in a small place in my truck. Rest of the bed is taken up with my bait. Nothin but a big fast fish food drive thru for me to go fish. Never know what they are going to want if I am out for eaten size. Nothin but live bait goes on the pole for the biggens. |

you can also look for log jams, beaver dams ,rip-rap,dont forget limb lines set before classes-check them after.if there is a bridge over the dam ,or a walkway ,and they allow it ,try fishing on the dam ...look for the slack current,or ballon float to whatever spot catches your eye. |

On of my must have bank fishing tackel items is my pole holder. not mutch good for rock banks but great in mud. a 1-2" pipe welded to a 2-3' piece of rebar works just fine for me. i've seen sections of garage door springs attached instead of pipe witch gives a little and if done right you can set the hook withem still in the spring. |

Bucket rig rod holders are great for rocky areas and docks/piers. Take a five gallon bucket and hook a piece of pvc pipe on each side big enough for you rod to fit in. Use some type of clamp and bolts, nuts to attach the pipe. If you want to fill the bucket with water make sure you put caulking around the holes the bolts went through. Fill the bucket with water or rocks and you have a rod holder that you don't have to stick in the mud. |

I usually fish where the current from the damn ends where the fish are waiting for wounded or shocked fish to gobble up. Also, look for structures or areas where there are broken down trees and brushes built up. Put a bluegill about 5' to 6' and cast it up into the current and let it go down stream. |
